Update for Tuesday, June 29

Message for Students

June 28, 2021

Please note the following for Tuesday, Jan. 29:

  • Online classes will resume on Tuesday.
  • Tacoma campus in-person classes will continue to be held in air-conditioned classrooms.
  • Gig Harbor campus will re-open.

We care about our students, and want you to stay safe and as cool as possible. Please communicate with your instructors if you are facing any difficulties with attending class due to the heat. If you are commuting, taking care of loved ones or facing other difficulties, please know we will support you. Please work with your instructors. Students who miss class due to the heat will not be penalized.

The National Weather Service is reporting the temperature will cool down to 67 degrees tonight. It is still expected to be sunny and hot on Tuesday, with a high of 92. Please take all of the precautions you need to take care of yourselves and your families. Follow these tips with keeping cool.

Due to the weather forecast for extreme heat on Monday, June 28, all online classes will be canceled.

In-person classes will be held on the Tacoma campus, in air-conditioned classrooms.

Gig Harbor campus will be closed on Monday, June 28.

We encourage our students to be safe and stay as cool as possible. Please communicate with your instructors if you are facing any difficulties with attending class due to the extreme heat. Students who miss class due to the extreme heat will not be penalized.

Again, all online classes are canceled on Monday, June 28. In-person classes on the Tacoma campus will be held.

We will make an announcement on Monday about Tuesday classes.

Pierce County has set up “cooling centers” in various locations. And Pierce Transit is providing free bus rides to those cooling centers as well.

  • ELC remains closed on Tuesday.
  • Building 15 is closed due to repairs.

We continue to encourage staff and faculty to stay as safe and cool as possible. If you are experiencing continued heat exhaustion or need to take leave to take care of needs due to the heat, we will be flexible and ask that you work with your supervisor.

We also encourage you to work in a comfortable environment. If you wish to come onto campus and work in an air conditioned office or workspace, please do so. Please follow all safety protocols.

  • ELC is closed on Monday and Tuesday.
  • Building 15 is closed.

TCC is not suspending operations. We want to support you to work in a comfortable and safe environment. Many of our buildings on the Tacoma campus is climate controlled. For those who wish to come onto campus and work in your individual offices, you may do so. For those who work in shared office spaces, you may follow your existing safety plans or contact your supervisor to find a safe, socially distanced workspace. We will open up several buildings on campus for employees. Please note:  You must follow all safety protocols, including wearing a mask at all times and practicing social distance. Supervisors: If you need assistance finding a safe space for your employees to work, please contact Public Safety.

If you come onto campus to work, please do the following:

  • Check in by Monday morning: https://www.tacomacc.edu/healthcheck
  • Go to Building 14 for a temperature check and final check-in. There will be extra check-in stations set up on Monday morning.
  • Bring lots of water. If you need more, Campus Public Safety in Building 14 has plenty to share.
  • Bring your keys, including your badge reader, to access buildings. If you need access, call Public Safety.

We encourage our employees to be safe and stay as cool as possible. Please communicate with your supervisors if you are facing any difficulties due to the extreme heat.

We will be flexible, and if you need to take leave to take care of yourselves, families, pets and other needs, please work with your supervisor.
