Tacoma Seeks Applicants for Guaranteed Income Demonstration

Applicants Needed!

TCC students and employees: How much could an additional $500 per month for 12 months improve your life?

The City of Tacoma is accepting applicants for the Growing Resilience in Tacoma (GRIT) program demonstration from 10 a.m. Aug. 9 – 11:59 p.m. Aug. 16.

About GRIT

Part of a national project, GRIT is a first-of-its-kind guaranteed income demonstration in Tacoma. Participants may receive $500 a month for 12 months as a supplement to their income and public benefits. They will take part in surveys to help determine the impact these funds make over time.

A guaranteed income is a monthly, cash payment given directly to individuals. It is unconditional, with no strings attached. It’s meant to supplement, rather than replace, income and benefits.

GRIT is a collaborative effort between the City of Tacoma, United Way of Pierce County and the Mayor’s Guaranteed Income (MGI) Network. Planning partners also include: Greater Tacoma Community Foundation, Sound Outreach, Tacoma Urban League and Tacoma Housing Authority.

How it Works

Participants will be randomly selected from a pool of qualified individuals by researchers from the Center for Guaranteed Income Research. Participants will be randomly placed into one of three groups:

Group 1 Group 2 Group 3
One group will be randomly selected to get $500 per month for 12 months directly deposited into a personal account. This group will complete surveys and interviews to help us understand how guaranteed income works. This group will be paid $30 on a gift card for each survey they complete. This group will not get the monthly $500 stipend. This group will complete surveys and interviews to help us understand how guaranteed income works.
