Solomon Amendment
What is the Solomon Amendment?
The Solomon Amendment is a federal law that allows military recruiters to access student information for students 17 years of age and older. This federal law requires institutions that receive federal agency funding to fulfill military recruitment requests. TCC is obligated to release data included on the list of “student recruiting information,” which may or may not match our school’s definition of Directory Information. Data will not be released to the military for students with a FERPA restriction.
Student Information that can be requested and released for currently enrolled students:
- Name
- Address
- Email address
- Telephone Number
- Age and/or Date of Birth
- Academic Major/program of study
Please note that when a list is generated, it is a snapshot of information at that moment. If a student has submitted a request to apply a FERPA restriction after the snapshot is taken, the student's information will have been included on the report.
Procedure for Releasing Information to Military Recruiters:
- Under the Solomon Amendment, the information will be released for military recruitment purposes only.
- Each branch may receive student information once each term. If the college has already released the information to a specific branch/unit, we will not release the list again.
- The request must be submitted in writing on letterhead by an authorized representative. It must clearly identify the unit of service requesting the specific student recruitment information. The requestor must also attest on the letter that they are authorized by the Branch to request Solomon Amendment data.
- Please submit requests via enrollmentservices@tacomacc.edu. We charge a $50.00 request processing fee plus $0.05 per student on the report.
- A response letter/email will be sent to the requestor with the estimated fee amount, along with directions on how to be set up to make payment and to schedule a specific date for payment.
- The date of payment will also be when Enrollment Services will pull data on currently enrolled students to send the final total amount due. Payment must be made same day in order to capture the most current enrollment.
- Military Recruiter will make payment via: Online Payment Form -- Non-Students Only : Tacoma Community College once paid the recruiter will receive a email. Please forward that email receipt of payment to enrollmentservices@tacomacc.edu for list distribution.
- Access to the report will only be available for 30 days from the date fulfilled. After that point, the permission for access will expire and a new list will need to be generated based on possible changes in enrollment and/or FERPA status. Additional fees may be charged accordingly.
