ACCUPLACER

All new students who plan to take a math or English class at TCC and do not qualify under Multiple/Alternative Measures evaluation (see possibilities) must take the ACCUPLACER™ assessment.

Starting Spring Quarter 2018 TCC is implementing the ACCUPLACER™ Next Generation Reading assessment to evaluate students for English Placement and the ACCUPLACER™ Next Generation Math series for math placement.

Next-generation ACCUPLACER placement assessments cover the same three subject areas of reading, writing, and mathematics. New features of the placements include:

  • A greater focus on a range of content areas, text complexity, and writing modes;
  • Ability to assess rhetoric, synthesis, and vocabulary skills;
  • Longer text (up to 400 words) and paired text;
  • Shift to more authentic tasks such as revising and editing within a wide range of texts; and
  • Math sequences aligned to clear pathways.

Next-generation placement specifications and sample questions are also located on the ACCUPLACER website. Read more and get practice questions at https://accuplacer.collegeboard.org/educator/next-generation

Remember TCC will only use the Reading and Math Placements for evaluation. No essay is evaluated in this new process. Faculty have evaluated maximum benefit for students by this method. Both placements are multiple choice. The ACCUPLACER™ will assess your understanding of math and English. Your scores place you into an appropriate starting level. See chart for Placement. Based on your placement results, your advisor will help you see which classes are available to you, and select the Pathway for your chosen area of study.

Check below for times and dates. Best to call 24 hour line 253-566-5158 for current update. Gig Harbor Campus placement is by appointment only: Please call 253-460-2424 for current schedule.

If you have taken a placement test (COMPASS or ACCUPLACER) at another college in the last two years we can use that for placement.

If you have taken a placement at another college in the last two years we can use most Washington State placements. Please send official score report to Placement@tacomacc.edu.
