You've heard of Phishing. Have you heard of Vishing?

You’ve heard of Phishing.  Have you heard of Vishing?

Vishing is similar to Phishing, but instead of using email, a phone call is used to trick a person into disclosing personal information like credit card numbers or PIN codes.  We have received reports that Washington state government agencies have been targeted by Vishing campaigns.

Here are some things you can do:

  • Do not trust unsolicited calls. Do not provide any personal information.
  • Think before you speak. Scammers want you to act — and give out information. The person on the end of the line may sound sincere and trustworthy, but that doesn’t mean they’re legitimate. When in doubt, contact them back on a known good phone number or website.
  • Have your guard up with automated calls. Be particularly skeptical of scare tactics, prizes and special offers.
  • Be aware that caller ID can be easily spoofed by scammers.
  • Never give control of your computer to a third party unless you can confirm that it is a legitimate representative of your computer support team.
