Q: I am interested in sonography but am unsure where to begin. What steps I should take?

Your first step is to complete the required Diagnostic Medical Sonography Virtual Information Session.

The DMS program at TCC is a general sonography program. Graduates of the program may attempt the national registry board exams in the specialties of abdomen & small parts, breast, and or obstetrics & gynecology. An introductory course to vascular sonography is included in this curriculum and is intended for the general sonographer who performs basic vascular sonograms. For those wishing to enter into vascular sonography or echocardiography, Bellevue College and Seattle University both offer education and experience dedicated to those areas of specialty.

Q: I have taken classes at another school. How can I find out if they will transfer to TCC?

A: All math and science classes must have been completed within 5 years of the quarter in which you intend to apply, regardless of where they were taken. All other prerequisite courses do not have a time limit.

You may refer to the Common Course Equivalencies chart for some of the schools most commonly attended besides TCC. If you do not find your school on the list, please send an official transcript you would like to be evaluated to: Enrollment Services, Bldg. 7, Attention: Colleen Spezia, transcript evaluator.

Q: I am planning on taking the prerequisite courses at a school other than TCC. How can I make sure that I take the correct ones that will transfer to TCC?

Q: What is the application deadline?

July 1 for entry into the fall quarter of that year. All prerequisites must be completed prior to the July 1 deadline with the exception of the PHYSICS 115. See below for details in regards to the PHYSICS 115:

PHYSICS 115 COURSE CHANGE (updated 11/8/2013)

  • The physics department at TCC will be offering PHYS 115 during winter & summer quarters.
  • For only those students who will need to take PHYS 115 summer quarter, the DMS program will accept ONLY your PHYS 115 grade after the July 1 deadline.
  • Only the PHYS 115 at TCC will be accepted and evaluated after July 1.
  • PHYS 115 from other schools are not acceptable for summer quarter only.
  • Late grade approval will only be accepted at TCC.
  • Only those students who must enroll in the PHYS 115 course at TCC in order to complete their prerequisites will be considered for this conditional application date extension.

Q: How many students do you accept each year?

The number of applicants accepted into the program is approximately 18-20. This number may be adjusted due to changes in accommodations both on and off campus.

Q: Is there a wait list for getting into the program?

No, there is not a wait list for the program. You need to have all your prereqs done and your 8-hour ultrasound job shadow completed by the application deadline of July 1.

Q: What is your selection process for entry?

Acceptance into the program is based on points. The grade you receive for each of your prerequisite courses is assigned a points value. The students with the top scores are offered a place in the program. In evaluating applications, additional points are awarded for experience in patient related healthcare experience. Please see the DMS Program Application Packet for more details.

Q. How do I apply to the DMS program, if I have completed all the requirements?

A: Beginning April 1 the Diagnostic Medical Sonography application will be available online via your TCC portal. Applications will be accepted until July 1 at 5:00 p.m. Applications will only be accepted via the online submission process. Q: I am interested and would like more information, but will not be ready to apply immediately.

Clicking on InsideTCC will take you to a feature of the Tacoma Community College website that allows you to customize your own personal interests in the programs and classes that TCC has to offer. It is password protected and gives you up-to-date information on only the information you really want from TCC. You can receive updates on Diagnostic Medical Sonography as well as other departments and programs and will be notified immediately of any changes that occur.

Q: I hold a bachelor's degree or higher. Can I receive extra credit toward my application score?

No, we do not provide extra points or preference for an advanced degree. Everyone must complete the same prerequisites.

Q: I hold a medical degree from another country. Can I receive extra credit toward my application score?

A: No, we do not provide extra points or preference for an advanced degree. Everyone must complete the same prerequisites.

Q: If I am offered a position in the DMS program are there additional requirements that I will need to complete?

Yes. In order to complete the required clinical rotations, students need to provide the following additional documentation upon acceptance into the program. However, students will be responsible to provide the following documents to a third-party provider:

  1. Background check by a third-party provider: Certain conviction history excludes persons from health care employment. If you have any prior convictions, even if you believe they may be sealed, please consult with the program chair for DMS or the division chair.
  2. Drug Testing: Clinical agencies have to maintain a drug free workplace that promotes a safe and healthy work environment and is in compliance with applicable laws. Based on this therefore, some clinical sites required all students in their facilities complete a drug screen. Additional fees maybe incurred by the student.  
  3. Documentation of current immunizations: 2 step TB skin test (PPD), Tdap, HepB - 3 doses and a titer, MMR, Varicella, and flu shot.
