What is Adult Basic Education?

Adult Basic Education (ABE) develops skills in Reading, Writing, Math, Speaking/Listening in English, GED Preparation, and basic computer literacy. The Adult Basic Education program assists adults in obtaining the knowledge and skills necessary for work, further education, family self-sufficiency, and community involvement.

What programs does Adult Basic Education offer?

  • High School 21+ (high school completion)
  • College Preparation
  • Skill building for GED preparation
  • English as a Second Language (ESL)
  • Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training (I-BEST)

What is the enrollment process for new ABE students?

First, you must be admitted to Tacoma Community College. If you haven't applied yet, come to the ABE office, located in building 7, to fill out an Admission application. Please bring a valid picture ID. Next, you will need to take the CASAS assessment test so we can place you in classes at the appropriatte level. After you have taken the CASAS, you will register for a New Student Orientation session. At Orientation, you will learn about the ABE or ESL program and register for your classes.

Is New Student Orientation mandatory?

Yes, all new ABE and ESL students are expected to attend New Student Orientation before enrolling in classes.
