HIT Internships

Professional Practice Experience (PPE)

Welcome to the internship site page for the Health Information Technology (HIT) program at Tacoma Community College! This page will outline the internship process (we refer to these as PPEs..."professional practice experiences") our students go through in order to complete their academic programs.

Internship Process

The 40-80 hour unpaid Professional Practice Experience (Internship) allows students to gain hands-on experience and blend classroom theory with practice. These future RHITs should be able to do anything an employee in an entry-level HIT position is capable of. We have relationships with acute care, long-term care, and alternative care sites throughout the Puget Sound region. For distance-learning students, we can assist in placing you so be sure to contact your clinical coordinator ASAP.

Please note that internships cannot be done on the weekends. Most of our sites can only accomodate interns during the work week within normal business hours.

Becoming an Internship Site

If your organization would like to be an internship site, please email us at himprogram@tacomacc.edu. Participating sites are compensated with up to 5 AHIMA-approved CEUs per year for credentialed staff who mentor students and free admission for one professional to the Annual HIM Spring Leadership Conference held in late May or early June.

Helpful Documents for Sites

*We have included 2 ways in which to complete the student evaluations at the end of the internship. You may complete the paper copy (please mail or scan and attach to email returning to PPE Coordinator) or electronic copy (automatically sent to PPE Coordinator) depending on user preference. Both forms capture the same information.
