Placement Testing

Math or English Courses, or if you've never attended college ... All new students who plan to take a math or English class at TCC must take the ACCUPLACER assessment test for reading, grammar, and math. Based on your test results, your advisors will help you see which classes are available to you, and select the right class for your chosen area of study.

Study Up! Use these helpful Review Guides (in math, reading and sentence skills) to prepare you for your assessment test sections.
Check in advance for dates and times you can take the test. Call 253.566.5158 or contact Assessment.
Take the test (given at TCC in Bldg. 7). The test costs $18.
Photo ID is required for all tests.
Don’t like the results? Re-test once for no additional charge.

Transcript Review

Transcript review is for transfer students (who received credit for classes taken at another college).

For placement FAX an unofficial copy of your college transcript to 253.566.6011 or bring in person to Bldg. 7. Include your TCC student ID number on each transcript. Staff will respond through your TCC Portal e-mail - please activate to find how you were placed.
To get credit for classes and placement ORDER official transcripts from your former college(s) NOW and have them sent to TCC (6501 S 19th St. Tacoma, WA 98466, Building 7, Enrollment Services). Allow four weeks to process.

ACCUPLACER: Monday and Wednesday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. (call to confirm)
Testing is walk-ins only, no appointments.
GED Testing: Tuesday, Thursday by appointment only.

Call the 24-hour line to confirm dates/times as the schedule changes: 253.566.5158.

Tip: ACCUPLACER testing is very busy. Don't wait until 4 p.m. to sign up — space is limited, and we want to make sure you have time to complete the test.

Testing Fees

Fees must be paid before you arrive for testing.
Pay online, by telephone, or in person at the Cashiers Office, Bldg. 14.

ACCUPLACER: $18
GED Final testing fee: $75

Running Start Students must pay the $18 fee. Fresh Start, Worker Retraining, First Generation & Achiever Scholars receive waivers for the ACCUPLACER Test.

The Cashier's Office accepts cash, check, money order, or major credit cards.

TAN

TAN (Tour, Assessment and New Student Orientation) includes a chance to take (or retake) your assessment test, learn about ways to pay for college, tour the campus and attend your new student orientation. This option is highly recommended for students with any concerns about starting college or for those who wish to take care of their enrollment steps all on one day. Students who have already taken the ACCUPLACER placement test and are satisfied with their scores will want to select a regular New Student Orientation (NSO) instead. Link to sign up.
