Friday, December 07, 2012 – Tacoma Community Colleges is one of 10 WA community and technical colleges selected to receive funds from a Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation grant this year.

The Integrated Digital English Acceleration (I-DEA) project grant aims to increase the digital, career and college-readiness skills of adult English learners. I-DEA builds on the Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training (I-BEST) initiative, an internationally recognized teaching model that allows students to gain job skills along with basic education skills. The program targets adult learners in the lowest three levels of English as a second language.

Goals of the three-year project pilot include:

1.       Create open-source curriculum, allowing learning institutions around the world to replicate I-DEA.

2.       Identify best practices of technology-enhanced instruction that allow more students to be served with less in-class instruction.

The grant funds 10 colleges during the first year of the project. The remaining colleges in the cc-tech system will be added during years 2 and 3. In total, the grant will serve approximately 1,600 adult learners in cohorts at the state’s 34 community and technical colleges, as well as partner community-based organizations.

For more information about the I-DEA grant and the I-BEST program, see the press release sent out yesterday by the State Board of Community and Technical Colleges.
