The first two years of a Pre-Medicine program may be completed at Tacoma Community College. The program of studies listed below leads to the Associate of Science Degree, Biology Specialization. Upon completion of this degree, students may be able to transfer to most four-year colleges and universities as a junior. Although members of the biology department make every effort to consult with various colleges and universities regarding requirements, students are encouraged to consult catalogs, websites and advisors at their chosen four-year institution during their freshman year.

Preparation: Students interested in medicine should gain as much exposure to the profession as possible by observing, assisting, and gaining work experience in offices, clinics, hospitals, and research facilities.

Program Planning: Students should meet with a science advisor during their first quarter at Tacoma Community College. Students may also refer to the Associate of Science Degree description located in the Tacoma Community College catalog or the Science Division website http://www.tacomacc.edu/academics/mathematicssciencesandengineeringdivision/science/sciencedegrees/associateofsciencedegree/biologyspecialization.aspxat Many courses are sequential, and a careful selection of classes each quarter is needed to complete the program without delay.

Although the UW Medical School does not officially require a bachelor’s degree, one is generally necessary in order to be a competitive applicant. Medical schools do not give preference to any particular major. Thus the major should be considered as a basis for future career or graduate study if the student is not accepted to medical school.

• Some students may need to take additional prerequisite courses.
• The Humanities and Social Science courses must be chosen from the Humanities and Social Science courses on the Approved Distribution Course List.
• At least one course must be chosen from the list of approved multicultural courses on the Approved Distribution Course List.
• Physics 114 and 115 are recommended as elective courses. They are required by most medical schools.
• PE activity courses cannot be used as elective courses.
• A maximum of 5 credits of electives can be from courses that do not appear on the Basic Requirements list of the Associate in Arts and Sciences Degree Option A or on the Approved Distribution Course List. Such courses must be approved by a biology advisor.
