Course Objectives
  • To introduce students to the basic principles of probability and statistics.
  • To enable students to understand the use of statistical reasoning as applied to social sciences, in particular, as applied to issues of African-Americans.
  • To provide an opportunity for students to experience the use of statistics in an out-of-classroom setting.
  • To provide an opportunity for students to experience the use of a computer software package to analyze data.

Course Requirements

Attendance Students will be allowed 2 absences only. Each absence over 2 will lower a student's final grade by 2 percentage points. To have an absence excused a student must receive permission from me either before the absence, or in case of emergency, before the next class. It is then the student's responsibility to ask for extra work to make up for the missed class. Excused absences will count for 1/2 absence
Exams (100 points each) There will be 4 in class exams. One 8-1/2 X 11 inch sheet of notes may be used for each exam.
Exam Rebates After each in class exam you will be given a chance to earn a rebate of up to 25% of the points lost on the exam. You will be given until the class period following when the exams are returned in order to rework the exam. You must rewrite the entire solution of any problem for which you wish to receive rebate points. The reworked solutions must be done on separate paper. The original graded exam must be handed in along with the reworked problems.
Final Exam (100 points) There will be a comprehensive final exam. Four pages of notes may be used.
Quizzes (10 points each) There will be daily short take-home quizzes. Take-home quizzes will be due on the non-discussion class following the class in which they are assigned. No late quizzes will be accepted.
Reading Quizzes (5 points each) Each discussion class will begin with a short reading comprehension quiz covering all the readings assigned for that day.
Journals (5 points each) Each student will be required to keep a journal. The purpose of this journal will be to record your thoughts and feelings about the course and the material you are learning and to aid in communication between instructors and students. Consider such questions as:
  • What did you learn from class, discussion, homework, etc.?
  • What questions do you have about the work?
  • Describe any discoveries you made about statistics or about yourself doing statistics.
  • What confused you? What challenged you? What did you like? What did you not like?
Journals must be handed in each week on Thursday. Each week's entry must be of at least one page in length. Journals will be accepted late one class period only and will then be worth 3 points. Journals may also be submitted electronically by email.
Project (100 points) A project will be required that will involve the collection and analysis of data on a topic of your choosing. The project consists of five parts culminating in written report due at various times throughout the semester. (See the Course Schedule for due dates). The parts of the project are
  1. Project proposal
  2. Collected data
  3. Descriptive statistics
  4. Inferential statistics
  5. Final report
Online Discussion Forum (5 points extra credit each week) Each student will be able to earn up to 5 extra credit points each week for taking part in an online discussion forum available though the course website.

The purpose of this discussion forum is for you to further express your thoughts, ask questions and continue discussions with other students on topics relevant to the course materials. Your discussion posts should focus on course materials and should reflect an interaction with other postings. To that end, you are expected to read the majority of the postings on the discussion list. You may choose to reply to any posting.

Postings totaling 10 lines are required by Friday midnight of each week in order to earn 5 extra credit point
Study Groups and Extra Credit Students are required to form study groups consisting of 2 to 5 students. On a rotational basis study groups will be expected to put the solution (or attempted solution) to a homework problem on the board at the beginning of class. Anyone else wishing to do so may also put a homework problem on the board on any day . Anyone who writes a problem on the board will receive 2 extra credit points regardless of whether the solution is correct. If all members of a study group fail to put a problem on the board when assigned, then all members will be docked 2 points.
Letter Grades Grades will be determined according to the following scale:
Grade A A- B+ B B- C+ C C- D+ D
Percent 90 87 83 80 77 73 70 67 63 60
