Program tutors for the CASA Program at Tacoma Community College provide academic support in the CASA/MECA Instructional Center for participants.  The CASA program provides comprehensive support services for students who are first generation college students, have financial need and/or a documented disability.

General Responsibilities:

  • Meet with students one on one to assist them in formulating questions, learning concepts and reviewing course materials.
  • Meet with small study groups, when appropriate, to facilitate small group cooperative learning.
  • Assist students in mastering subject matter as well as reading textbooks critically, taking notes, managing their time and successful test preparation.
  • Refer students to other student services and instructors, when appropriate.
  • Use available resources and tools to assist students with their learning.
  • Serve as a role model for students in CASA, modeling commitment to learning and preparation for tutoring sessions.
  • Work with faculty as needed to assure appropriate and effective tutoring.
  • Participate in in-service training as requested.
  • Play a supportive role in the success of the CASA program and its students.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must have and maintain a GPA of 3.0 (B) or better in all college coursework.  Transcript required.
  • Must obtain a recommendation from a faculty member prior to employment.
  • Effective verbal and written skills.
  • Experience working effectively with ethnically and culturally diverse populations.
  • Must attend orientation/training.

Preferred Qualifications:

Ability to tutor in both Math and English subjects.
