Description:Purpose/role of the position in Math, Science and Engineering lab:
Students will assist the science department in supporting lab courses and maintaining labs and auxiliary areas.
Job Description, All employees will:
  1. wash and put away glassware and supplies
  2. help keep labs and preparation areas clean, stocked and organized
  3. help prepare and put away labs for science courses
  4. learn laboratory techniques, procedures and equipment use
  5. working with or around live plants and animals including reptiles, rodents, and insects my be required
  6. working with or around preserved animal specimens may be required

Possible additional duties depending on qualifications, abilities and course work:

  1. Cleaning, maintenance and operation of science laboratory supplies and equipment, such as general lab equipment and freshwater aquaria

  2. help clean and maintain greenhouse (includes watering, pruning, fertilizing, and pest control)
  3. learn chemical and biological techniques and procedures (including handling of chamicals and/or bacterial cultures)
  4. assist with preparation of microbiological media
  5. learn treatment and disposal of biological hazardous waste (bacterial cultures)
  6. learn treatment and disposal of chemical hazardous wastes
  7. organize/inventory laboratory equipment and /or reagents
  8. may occasionally staff the window in the science department's main office
  9. creating science displays in the science builing
All of these duties are an integral part of providing a safe and pleasant place, both for instructors and students to teach and learn, and for employees to perform their work in support of the Science Division.
Location: Bldg 15. Students will be assigned to work in the biology or chemistry stockroom depending on qualifications. Students may occasionally assist in other areas of the building.
