Tips on Applying

Here are some tips that can help you be a successful scholarship applicant.

Tip 1:  Apply only if you are eligible.
Read all the scholarship requirements and directions carefully, and make sure that you are eligible before you send in your application. You must have at least a 2.0 GPA and plan on attending TCC in the fall. Most scholarships cover 3 academic quarters.

Tip 2:  Complete the application in full and follow directions.
You can give yourself a competitive advantage by reading the directions carefully. Provide everything that is required. Be sure to complete the entire application. If a question does not apply, note that on the application. Do not just leave it blank.

Tip 3:  Accuracy and neatness count.
If you're reusing material (such as an essay) from another scholarship application, be especially careful you haven't left in any incorrect names or blank fields. It is recommended that you type your answers to the “Free Form Questions” and required essays in Word and then cut and paste into the text box provided on the online application. Proofread the entire application carefully. Nothing is less impressive than an application with misspelled words or grammar errors. Ask a friend, teacher or parent to proofread it as well.

Tip 4:  Watch for deadlines.
Impose a deadline for yourself that is at least two weeks before the stated deadline. Use this 'buffer time' to proofread your application before you send it off. YOU are responsible for making sure all parts of the application arrive on time. This includes supporting materials, such as letters of recommendation and transcripts. So make sure everyone who is contributing to your application has ample lead-time.

Tip 5:  Seek help when you need it.
If you have problems with the application, visit the FAQ's section on this website. For help uploading documents, please visit the Library, Writing and Tutoring Center or Information Commons. For tips on writing an essay or navigating the STARS system, attend a Ways2Pay workshop. If you aren't able to find the answer to your question(s), contact our Outreach and Recruitment office via email or at 253.566.6042.
