TCC's Continuing Professional Education programs are dedicated to helping professionals build careers. Whether you need career training, a certificate or permit to continue employment or advance your career, continuing education credits to satisfy licensing requirements, or you would like to enrich your professional knowledge, we have specialized programs providing educational opportunities for professionals in many fields.

Course presentation includes classroom instruction, correspondence courses, online classes and self-instructional videos. Courses are conveniently offered daytime, evenings and weekends at Tacoma Community College’s main campus. They are affordable, held in a friendly environment and taught by highly skilled licensed instructors and practitioners who will provide you with the training necessary to reach your goals.

Professional Polygraph Certification -

For the first time ever in Washington State a fully accredited and certified polygraph course is offered, right here on the TCC campus. Tacoma Community College is partnering with Marston Polygraph to offer the full nine week course. There are only three accredited polygraph schools in the 11 western states, and none in the Northwest. Marston is a highly recommended and established academy with training experience in several countries along with their home location in California. Graduates most often work for law enforcement, fire departments, federal offices, and the Department of Corrections. Classes start July 7th and only 20 students will be accepted. A clean criminal record is required. A history of working in law enforcement, the military, or fire departments is highly recommended as well as a willingness to travel.

Business Language

Command Spanish for Business -

Are you traveling to Spanish-speaking countries for business? Would you like to be able to speak with your Spanish-speaking clients and their family members in their native language? Learn to introduce yourself, count to 2000, compliment people, order food and drink, register in a hotel, make simple purchases, and request emergency assistance. Increase your language and cross-cultural skills so that you can better enjoy your travel and have a more successful business relationship with your Spanish-speaking work associates.

Command Spanish for Construction Sites -

Learn specific Spanish language skills so that you will be better able to manage your Spanish-speaking employees and clientswith employment, medical, and safety issues, as well as construction logistics. THis program is a comprehensive Spanish language program that provides immediate access to functional language skills for non-Spanish-speaking construction site supervisors. The language component utilizes phonetic encoding to address pronunciation of the most important commands, questions, and phrases pertinent to daily interactions between supervisors and workers at construction sites.

Beyond Icebreakers: Activities to Build Positivity and Impact Performance -

Energize your next staff meeting or retreat with these easy-to-lead, engaging, and fun activities. Whether you're way past the "icebreaking" stage, or still chipping away, this course will provide you with the tools you need to influence your business climate, and impact the performance of your team. Designed with the busy manager in mind, this is a one-session course for leaders who wish to immediately apply what they have learned.

Characteristics of Highly Performing Teams -

You've read the books, you have attended the seminars - now, get an "in the bones" sense of what a highly performing team can be! This one-session course will introduce several core characteristics of teams, and invite participants to try them on - with a focus on experiential learning. Learn how these characteristics show up in relationships, and how to use them more skillfully and intentionally.

E-Business Transformation Planning -

Explore strategies for rapidly deploying e-Business principles to improve your financial performance. A framework is presented that includes Transformation Stages, Planning, Responsibilities, Transformation Model, Transformation Leadership and an overview of the e-Business Transformation Journey.

General Lean Overview -

How do you improve productivity, cut costs, and improve the bottom line? GET LEAN! Lean methodologies apply to all aspects of business (NOT just manufacturing and supply chain processes). THe success of Lean methods is the ability to identify waste, reduce it, and aggressively go for the elimination of non-value added activities.

Train the Trainer -

Help your trainers, team leaders and shift supervisors be more effective role models and teachers for employees. Workshop participants will review adult learning styles, demonstrate/practice eight stages of training and development, practice workshop construction, demonstrate/practice effective presentations, and conduct still practice exercises.

Human Resource Planning and Job Analysis -

Are you new to the human resource field, interested in pursuing a career in human resources, or are you an HR professional wanting to brush up on your knowledge? This course provides an overview of the job planning and analysis activities performed by human resources professionals. Identify the necessary steps in the job analysis process and the guidelines for properly carrying them out. Learn to anticipate and meet workforce requirements in order to achieve your company's strategic goals. Practice writing job descriptions and job specifications.

Recruitment, Selection & Hiring -

Recruiting, selecting, and hiring new staff can be a legal minefield for human resources managers. This course equips human resources professionals with the skills they need to avoid legal pitfalls in finding and hiring the right people. It addresses the most common stumbling blocks, including job descriptions, job advertising, interviewing and equal opportunity concerns.

Employee Professional Development -

Every organization needs well-adjusted, trained, and experienced people to perform its activities. This course equips human resources professionals with tools and techniques to design an employee professional development program to meet organizational goals and objectives. It addresses socialization, skills training, and professional development as motivational tools to improve efficiency and productivity.

Performance Management -

Performance appraisals are an opportunity to evaluate whether individuals are meeting established standards and goals, yet they are often poorly designed, underutilized or managers are not trained to administer them effectively. This course equips human resources professionals with methods to improve the performance appraisal process in their own organization. It addresses performance management systems and the performance appraisal process.

Project Management

Project Management Overview -

What is project management and how can it help me? How do I get started? this course provides an introduction to project management and project life cycles including initiating, planning, executing, controlling, and closing. In addition to concrete management tools, student will learn a common terminology for project management; key elements to consider when planning a project; tips to assist in managing teams and building consensus among participants and stakeholders; and strategies for addressing risk and change controls. Real work examples and interactive exercises will help you implement these skills in your work environment.

Introduction to Microsoft Office Project -

Use the concepts from the overview course and apply them in Microsoft Project. Create task lists, assign resources, fine-tune your project plans, track your progress, and share and publish project information.
