Educational Philosophy

Physics is a hands-on area of study. My classes stress both the theoretical and applicational aspects of the subjects that I am teaching. In the physics courses, students should expect to work hard and to learn some other life skills in addition to Physics (such as writing, oral presentations, study skills, teamwork, and organization. Students often comment that they thoroughly enjoy the class, that the workload is more than they expected, and that they find the experience very rewarding.

Areas of Interest

My hobbies/interests are fishing (fresh water, salt water, crabbing and shrimping), hunting, reading, and especially studying the Bible. I have taught a student Bible study at TCC since 2007 and am the advisor of the Christians on Campus student club. I have also been the co-advisor of the ASME (Engineering) Club since 1999.

Biography

I am originally from Fremont, Ohio and moved to the Tacoma area in 1994 with my wife after graduate school at the University of Minnesota. We have two children – Alexander and Katherine. My wife works as a Medical Physicist. Her job is overseeing the planning and treatment of cancer patients with radiation therapy.

I have been teaching full-time at TCC since 1999 but have been teaching in the Washington Community College system since 1994. I have taught mainly Physics courses in my career, but have also taught Math and Astronomy.
