TCC Databases

IMPORTANT NOTE: TCC students, faculty and staff will be prompted to log into CAS for free access to commercial databases such as Academic Search Premieror CQ Reseacher.

The following alphabetical list includes commercial and high quality free research databases. Most of the free databases provide indexing, but NOT full text. Bolded items include full text and require a TCC user name and password for access.

Academic Search Premier (Ebsco). Periodical database.This multi-disciplinary database provides full text for nearly 4,500 journals, including full text for more than 3,600 peer-reviewed titles. Most articles are scholarly. PDF back files to 1975 or further are available for well over one hundred journals.

African American Study Center (Oxford). Articles from specialized encyclopedias of African American and African history and culture. Includes primary sources and the African American National BiographyFull text.

AGRICOLA (National Agriculture Library). Journal article citation index and catalog of the National Agriculture Library. Free. Index Only.

AGRIS Information for international agricultural research. AGRIS is the international information system for the agricultural sciences and technology. It was created by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in 1974, to facilitate information exchange and to bring together world literature dealing with all aspects of agriculture. Free. Index Only.

Anthropological Index Online Citations to publications in the field of anthropology. Free. Index Only.

ArtStor The ARTstor Digital Library is a nonprofit resource that provides more than one million digital images in the arts, architecture, humanities, and sciences with a suite of software tools for teaching and research.

BioMed Central Publishes more than 150 peer-reviewed open access journals covering all areas of biology and medicine. Free.

Bloom's Literary Reference Literary criticism, and analyses of authors, works, themes, genres, and literary topics.

CINAHL (Ebsco). The Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health indexes 2,857 journals from the fields of nursing and allied health. The database contains more than 1,000,000 records dating back to 1982.

Civil Engineering Database Citations and abstracts from the American Society of Civil Engineers. Coverage from 1973-. Free. Index Only.

ClinicalTrials.gov The U.S. National Institutes of Health, through its National Library of Medicine, has developed ClinicalTrials.gov to provide patients, family members and members of the public current information about clinical research studies. Free. Full Text.

Congress and the Nation. Provides clear, comprehensive coverage of U. S. Congressional action from 1945 to 2008. Navigate chronologically, or search and browse politics and policy within topic areas such as: environment and natural resources, national security, social services and disabilities.

CQ Researcher Periodical database. This weekly magazine provides thoughtfully written analysis of social, economic and political issues back to 1991. Every issue features an extensive report on one topic. 

Digital Learning Library. A collection of assignments, exercises, presentations, assessment tools and more developed by TCC faculty and staff.

Ebrary. Over 70,000 electronic books, with broad coverage on academic topics. Viewable with your web browser; now downloadable to ereaders and ereader apps with some restrictions.

eLibrary (ProQuest) Index and full text of many magazines and newspapers, plus radio transcripts and more. Also includes basic overviews of some topics in the news. Recommended for 80 and 90-level course work.

Encyclopedia of Earth: content, credibility, community A free, fully searchable collection of articles about "the earth, its natural environments and their interactions with society," written by scholars, professionals, educators, and experts who collaborate and review each other's work.

ERIC Consists of two files: the Resources in Education (RIE) file of document citations and the Current Index to Journals in Education (CIJE) file of journal article citations from over 750 professional journals. Free. Index Only.

Ethnic Newswatch (ProQuest) Periodical database. News, culture and history from 200 plus publications from the ethnic, minority and Native press in English and Spanish.

Films on Demand Provides access to over 20,000 streaming videos appropriate for academic research. Videos can be watched in their entirety, or as individual segments.

Gale Virtual Reference Library (GVRL) A compendium of online reference works, covering many disciplines. Search across all reference titles, or search within individual titles.

Hazardous Substances Data Bank HSBD is a toxicology data file on the National Library of Medicine's (NLM) Toxicology Data Network (TOXNET®). It focuses on the toxicology of potentially hazardous chemicals. It is enhanced with information on human exposure, industrial hygiene, emergency handling procedures, environmental fate, regulatory requirements, and related areas. Free. Full Text.

History Study Center Provides a vast collection of digitized primary and secondary sources for the study of global history.

Internet Encyclopedia of PhilosophyFree. Peer-reviewed.

Internet Encyclopedia of Psychology Free. Peer-reviewed.

Internet Movie Database (IMBD). Plots, characters, reviews for thousands of films. Free.

JSTOR Periodical database. Index and full text of older academic journal articles. TCC's collection includes: "Arts & Sciences I II & III."

Library Catalog. Find items on the TCC library's shelves, as well as digital books from our ebook collections.

Library of Congress Online Catalog A database of approximately 12 million records. Includes books, serials, computer files, manuscripts, cartographic materials, music, sound recordings and visual materials in the Library's collections. Free. Index Only.

Literary Index Indexes Contemporary AuthorsContemporary Literary Criticism,and Twentieth-Century Literary Criticism(print copies in the TCC Library) and other Gale literary publications. Full-text of the articles available from the TCC Library. Free. Index Only.

Movie Review Query Engine Over 120,000 full-text reviews covering more than 21,000 films from international, national, and local newspapers, arts and entertainment journals, and other sources. Free. Full Text.

National Geologic Map Database Catalogs of paper and digital maps and lithologic and geochronologic names. Free. Index Only.

National Newspapers Core (ProQuest) A collection within the larger ProQuestdatabase focusing on large circulation newspapers such as the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Wall Street Journal and Washington Post.

Nature Electronic access to the most recent 4 years of this important science journal; additional content from the web site. Index & full text.

NatureServe Conservation status, taxonomic, and distribution information for over 50,000 plants, animals and ecological communities in the United States and Canada. Free. Full Text.

Periodicals List. An A to Z listing of the individual magazines, newspapers and journals available to TCC students and where they are housed (whether in print or in electronic format).

ProQuest Periodical Databases This large combination of periodical databases provides index and full-text coverage of journals, magazines, newsletters and newspapers. Includes general academic subjects. Strong business coverage in ABI/Inform. Full-text of larger Washington State newspapers in Washington State Newsstand. Index and Full-text. We strongly advise using the Firefox internet browser with this resource.

PsycARTICLES (Ebsco) Periodical database. Full-text, peer-reviewed scholarly and scientific articles in psychology. Index and full text.

Public Library of Science (Plos) Refereed scientific articles and research, available for free. Articles include synopses (abstracts) written in non-scientific language. Free. Full Text.

PubMed Central Periodical database. The U.S. National Library of Medicine's digital archive of life sciences journal literature. Access to the full text of articles in PMC is free, except where a journal requires a subscription for access to recent articles. Free. Full text.

Science (AAAS). Online access to the American Association for the Advancement of Science's journal Science. Full Text.

ScienceDirect (Elsevier). Periodical database. Current issues and back files of about 1000 scientific journals. The first time you login to ScienceDirect through the library, you will need to set up a free "personal account" in order to access the full text of articles. Scientific American (single journal). Online access including color illustrations. Full text.

Scitable A free science "library" sponsored by Nature. Overviews of topics with links to articles in Nature. Currently focusing on "genetics, the study of evolution, variation, and the rich complexity of living organisms." Free.

Social Science Research Network Access to thousands of abstracts and full-text research papers. Free, but requires registration. Index and Full-text.

Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy All entries and substantive updates are created by experts in the field and refereed by the members of an editorial board. Free.

TOXNET (Toxicology Data Network) Databases from the National Library of Medicine on toxicology, hazardous chemicals, and related areas. Free. Index Only.

U.S. EPA Online Library System Databases that can be used to locate books, reports,  and articles. Includes the National Catalog, which contains the holdings of the 28 EPA regional libraries and laboratories. Free. Index Only.

Washington State Newsstand (ProQuest) Periodical database. Includes the full text of most larger Washington State newspapers. Full text.

Westlaw[TCC Paralegal students only]. Primary and secondary legal sources. If you are a paralegal student without your own password, please ask at the reference desk for assistance.
