ACCUPLACER

All new students who plan to take a math or English class at TCC and do not qualify under Multiple Measures must take the ACCUPLACER™ assessment test by writing an essay, and doing a multiple choice test for reading and math. Based on your test results, your advisor will help you see which classes are available to you, and select the right class for your chosen area of study. Check in advance for dates and times you can take the testGig Harbor Campus: Please call 253.460.2424 for current schedule.

If you have taken a placement test (COMPASS or ACCUPLACER) at another college in the last two years we can use that for placement.

The ACCUPLACER™ will assess your understanding of math and English. The essay section evaluates your skill level in grammar, spelling, and your thought process.

Tips:

  • Prepare in advance -- attend a free ACCUPLACER™ Prep workshop
  • Study up! Use the Review Guides (in math, reading, sentence skills and Essay writing) to prepare you for your assessment test sections. Do not pay for any study guides as excellent options that are free are availble.
  • Check in advance for dates and times you can take the test.
  • If you're taking the online test, make sure your room is prepared and your computer is working properly.

Relax! ACCUPLACER™ was designed to help you succeed in college, but do prepare!

  • Get enough rest the night before.
  • Eat a light meal in advance of testing.
  • Stay alert.
  • Read each question carefully before answering.

It takes an average of an hour and a half to take all 3 parts. You can also choose to take one section at a time. So relax, and take your time.

Is the test timed? When you click in the writing space to start typing, you will have 40 minutes to complete your essay. TIP: You are not timed until you click in the writing space. So organize your thoughts, write them down on the scratch paper provided, prepare and then click in the space. In the room and need more paper? Please ask!
