Paramedic Prerequisites

The Paramedic application deadline is April 1.

Beginning Jan. 2, 2014, the Paramedic Education application will be available online through your TCC portal. Applications will be accepted until the deadline of April 1, 2014, at 5 p.m.

Before applying to the Paramedic program, you must complete the prerequisite courses listed below. Additionally, you must present proof of state licensing and/or national licensing. You must have a minimum of 1 year of ride time - volunteer experience is acceptable.

Prerequisites

ENGL& 101 or assessment at ENGL& 101English Composition I
MATH 90 or assessment at MATH 90Elementary Algebra
BIOL& 175 w/lab or BIOL& 170 non-lab**Human Biology
HIM 130**Medical Terminology

** The BIOL and HIM prerequisites must be completed before entering the program (but not before submitting an application).

Additional Requirements for In-Program Students

In order to complete the required clinical rotations, students need to provide the following additional documentation upon acceptance into the program. However, students will be responsible to provide the following documents to a third-party provider:

1. Background check - by a third-party provider

Certain conviction history excludes persons from health care employment. If you have any prior convictions, even if you believe they may be sealed, please consult with the program chair for paramedic or the division chair.

2. Drug Testing:

Clinical agencies have to maintain a drug free workplace that promotes a safe and healthy work environment and is in compliance with applicable laws. Based on this therefore, some clinical sites required all students in their facilities complete a drug screen. Additional fees maybe incurred by the student.  

3. Health clearance - Documentation of current immunization for:

  • TB test TB Skin test (PPD)
    - 2-step TB Test, if not tested in the last 12 months.
    - New + TB results: F/U by health care provider (chest X-ray & symptoms check), may also need to complete health questionnaire for facilities.
    - History of + TB results: provide proof of chest X-ray (lifetime, except if symptomatic) and submit negative symptom check past 12 months. If no proof of + TB Test available, then re-test with 2-step TB Test.
    - History of BCG vaccination - test with 2-Step TB Test.
  • Hepatitis B
    - Proof of immunity by vaccination (3 doses) and blood titer.
    - Negative titer: must repeat vaccine series. Student will be allowed in clinical during repeat series.
    - Considered a non-responder to vaccination after 2 complete vaccine series and titer negative.
  • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella
    - Proof of vaccination (2 doses) or proof of rubella, rubeola, and mumps immunity by titer.
  • Varicella (Chicken Pox)
    - Proof of vaccination (2 doses) or proof of immunity by titer.
    - If born after 1994, student must have proof of 2 doses of varicella vaccination.
  • Tetanus
    - Vaccination within last 10 years.
    - Tdap required if immunized after 6/1/07.
  • Flu vaccine
    - Proof of vaccination.

3. Current CPR - Health care provider

4. HIV-AIDS Education Certificate – 4-hour course

5. Proof of health insurance

It is the student’s responsibility to arrange for dependable transportation to and from the clinical site as well as for dependable child/dependent care.
