Optometrists provide primary vision care to patients. As an optometrist, you'll test patient sight, prescribe corrective lenses and diagnose and treat eye diseases like diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration.

Program Description

TCC offers courses that cover the first 2 years of a typical 4-year college pre-optometry program (college-level courses) as well as courses to develop skills needed for college-level courses.

Once you complete your associate degree at TCC, you can complete your bachelor's degree at your chosen 4-year school and apply to an optometry school. 

Degree Options: Associate in Arts and Sciences Degree (Option B)

Program Planning

High School Preparation: While in high school, students should pursue all the available courses in mathematics, chemistry, biology, and physics.

Students should gain exposure to the optometry profession through experience in an optometry setting and exploration of the optometry literature.

Recommended Class Schedule: We suggest the following schedule of classes for students who wish to earn  the Associate Degree in Arts and Sciences at TCC.

  • Each optometry school establishes its own prerequisites for admission. When deciding what classes to take, students should consult the schools of optometry they wish to attend.
  • Some students may need to take additional prerequisite courses.
  • BIOL& 221, 222, 223 may replace BIOL& 241, 242 for some optometry schools.
