Health care changes rapidly, and nursing education must change with it. Because of this, TCC has recently implemented a new curriculum, starting winter 2016, to ensure our program continues to provide the best, most current education possible. The new curriculum has been extensively reviewed and approved by several required organizations, including:

  • Various Tacoma Community College committees
  • Washington State Nursing Care Quality Assurance Commission
  • Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges
  • The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing

What does this mean? To be aligned with these changes, the nursing program has elected to go to a concept-based curriculum. The conceptual approach guides students to identify patterns or connections between patients and other key or underlying issues in complex situations. This approach is more effective than memorizing content, and allows students to focus their course of study on prevalent conditions/situations. This “flipped classroom” model, where students prepare for class ahead of time (reading, viewing videos/PowerPoints, completing quizzes), will prepare students to come to class and be ready to apply new concepts in a hands-on setting.

Nursing is an exciting career with a bright economic future. Nurses make up the largest health care profession in the United States. They work in a variety of settings, including clinics, hospitals, long term care facilities, and community centers.

TCC's Nursing, Associate Degree program is approved by the Washington State Nursing Care Quality Assurance Commission and is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) formerly NLNAC, 3343 Peachtree Road NE, Suite 850, Atlanta, Georgia, 30326.

Effective Winter 2016, the Nursing program has implemented a new curriculum for two year generic students (Summer 2016 LPN to RN Transition students will be the last group to come in under the old curriculum) New curriculum information.

In order to better assist students in understanding the nursing profession, and to understand the important steps in applying to the Nursing program, we expect prospective students to review the information in the packets below.

If there are still questions after review of the Nursing Program information packet, please consider attending one of our Nursing Information Sessions.  Pre-registration is not required for these sessions.  Please bring the nursing packet and your questions with you!

Please print out the parking permit for your session. You can park in any unmarked stall and place the pass in the front window on the driver’s side of the car. Parking lot B, C and D are closest if you can find parking there. Directions to our campus and a campus map.

Student Achievement Data

1. NCLEX pass rates to date for Quarters 1-4 of 2016 are 78.70%

2. 2015-2016 Program completion rate: 86% (Generic) to 95% (LPN)

3. 2015-2016 Job Placement: 87.5 of survey respondents were employed as an RN

4. 2015-2016 Graduate satisfaction: at least 85% of survey respondents feel the program prepared them to be an RN.

5. 2015-2016 Employer satisfaction: 100% of employer survey respondents are “extremely satisfied to satisfied” with the TCC graduate.
