A BRIEF HISTORY
Tacoma Community College has been offering classes in the Gig Harbor/Peninsula community since the mid-1970’s. During the first several years, credit and non-credit lifelong education courses were held in the evenings at Peninsula School district facilities.
Starting spring quarter 1981, the College leased a 3,300 square foot building in downtown Gig Harbor. The Campus had four classrooms, one office and a registration area. During the first few years of occupancy in the new facility, 10-20 academic and community service classes were offered each quarter.
Beginning in 1987, the number of classes offered began to increase steadily, and enrollments in both credit and non-credit programs also increased. Additional classroom space was needed, so classes were offered in 4-6 community facilities.
In 1995, the Campus moved to a custom designed 13,000 square foot college-owned building. The facility sits on a 10-acre parcel of land to accommodate long-range expansion plans. The facility has a welcoming open commons area used for a variety of student activities. There are eight classrooms, a conference room, a registration area, a bookstore, and a learning resource room. The building is currently full to capacity both mornings and evenings. Community buildings are used to house classes throughout the year, including Cottesmore Life Center, Gig Harbor High School, Gig Harbor Golf Course, Rosedale Recreation Center and World of Dance.
WHAT WE OFFER
The Campus offers credit courses for an associate degree, professional/technical and worker retraining programs. Adult basic education, leisure classes, customized business training and other programs are also available. Courses in computer literacy and a variety of popular software applications are taught in the Campus computer labs. TCC Gig Harbor Campus also participates in Running Start, a program that allows high school juniors and seniors to enroll in college classes to earn both high school and college credit. In addition to daytime classes, many offerings are available in the evenings and in on-line or hybrid on-line formats.
Students at the Campus can access services, including registration, assessment, advising, career exploration, cashiering, and book sales. Students can also use the Campus’ on-line library to order Tacoma campus materials, and access the Internet through the Computer lab.
