2013 TCC Baseball Season Preview imagePosted: 3/1/2013 8:20:00 PM

Titan's 3rd-year coach Ryan Mummert likes the makeup of a 2013 TCC baseball club that will be led by a strong experienced group of returners.

"I'm excited to get this season started. Last season we accomplished a lot that hadn't been done here at TCC in a while, but fell short of our goal at the end," Mummert said. "We have a great group of Sophomore's this year to go with a solid Freshman class and I know they can't wait to get started as well."

Players Returning: 12
Pos. Players w/Starting Experience Returning: 6
Pitchers w/Significant Innings Returning: 5
Newcomers: 15 (13 high school players; 2 transfers)

The Titans graduated significant players from last year's team losing 2 Division 1 players in All-NWAACC performer JJ Nazzaro(Gardner-Webb University) and Clayton Brown(Campbell University) as well as the RBI leader in the West, Stephan Adams(Lewis & Clark St). But a pair of All-Region Outfielders return for 2013 in Sophomores Garrett DeGallier(Bellevue, WA / Gonzaga) and Jordon Woodring(Tacoma, WA / Franklin Pierce HS).

DeGallier, a 2nd Team selection last year, batted .304 and leads all returners with 26 runs batted in, 21 walks and 10 stolen bases. Woodring, also a 2nd Team selection, hit .375 last year and drove in 15 runs. Both bring Valuable experience to the Titan's outfield.

Joining the 2 returners in the Outfield is Connor Cloyd(Maple Valley, WA / Tahoma HS) a transfer from University of Oregon. Cloyd brings speed from the left-side of the plate and can really track the ball in the Outfield. Other newcomers that will contribute include Freshmen Austin Johnson(Mountlake Terrace, WA / Mountlake Terrace HS) and JJ Pino(Mt Vernon, WA / Mt Vernon HS). Both give the Titans right handed bat options in the line-up with some pop.

"All our outfielders can run and we have great options from both sides of the plate," stated Coach Mummert. "We have great overall depth in the outfield."

Two players with starting experience return in the infield for the Titans in Sophomores Seth Heck(Edmonds, WA / Kamiak HS) and Ben Circeo(Bothell, WA / Cedar Park Christian HS).

Heck received many accolades last year earning 1st Team All-West Region, 2nd Team All-NWAACC, as well as earning a Gold Glove Award. He batted .355 and leads all returners with 59 hits and 32 runs. Heck will move over to Shortstop after spending last year at 2nd Base. Circeo, a part-time starter last year, will battle for the starting spot at 3rd Base, but also has the versatility to play all 4 infield positions.

Joining Heck in the middle are a pair Freshman in Evan Peterson(Puyallup, WA / Puyallup HS) and CJ Hicks(West Seattle, WA / Chief Sealth HS). Peterson gives the Titans a left-handed bat option with a high baseball IQ while Hicks hits right handed with great athletisism and speed. Both will battle for time at 2nd Base. Freshman Joel Moore(Orting, WA Orting HS) will also compete for time in the middle infield as well as on the mound.

Challenging Circeo for time at 3rd Base is Freshman Joe Greaney(Kent, WA / Kennedy HS). Greaney has showed Gold Glove type defense with some above average power at the plate. Should see some significant time this year.

At 1st Base, Freshman Joey Gamache(Bonney Lake, WA / Bonney Lake HS) brings a tall target with some pop in his bat and will look to make a significant impact for the Titans. Gamache will pitch as well. Challenging Gamache at 1st Base is returner Kenny Bayer(Puyallup, WA / Emerald Ridge HS), who looks to have a greater role this year.

"We are young this year in our infield, but I feel we are pretty talented," says Mummert. "Seth will be the leader of this group and if some of the newcomers step up, this group has a chance to have a bunch of success this year."

TCC returns 2 catchers from last year in Chad Michaud(Vancouver, WA / Prairie HS) and Jake Ross(Covington, WA / Kentlake HS).

Michaud, an All-West Region and Gold Glove recipient last year, batted .299 in 27 games last year. Challenging Michaud is Ross, who started 15 games behind the plate last year. Both catchers provide tremendous arm strength and will give the Titans valuable experience.
Providing depth at the catcher position is Freshman John Reece(Oregon City, OR / Oregon City HS). Reece provides some offense with his left-handed bat and could see some action.

"Chad and Jake give us one of the best catching duo's in the entire NWAACC," explains Mummert. "Both shut down the running game and are potential D1 guys and John provides that lefty option as well. This is a very solid position for us this year."

The Titans lost 3 of 4 starters from last year's staff that finished 3rd overall in the NWAACC in pitching, but there is definatley not a shortage of quality returners.

Leading the returners is Tim Dean(Sammamish, WA / Eastlake HS), the only returning starter from last year's rotation. Dean, a 1st Team All-West Region winner in 2012, posted an 8-0 record, a 1.03 ERA, 28 K, 17 BB, 38 Hits in 52 Innings. Dean, who has committed to the University of Incarnate Word in Texas for next year, should be in the rotation again in 2013. Another early signee is RHP Brandon Choate(Lynnwood, WA / Mountlake Terrace HS), committed to the University of Washington. Choate saw time in the closer role last year and has made a big jump this year with his fastball touching 91 mph with an 81 mph slider. He will see innings as a starter or closer again depending on how others develop. Other impact returners include lefty Tayler Saucedo(Maple Valley, WA / Tahoma HS), who runs it into the low 90's and saw a few starts last year, and righty Lukas Hinton(Yakima, WA / West Valley HS), who posted a 3.53 ERA in 28 Innings last year. Both will challenge for spots in the rotation. LHP Ryan Skoubo(Bremerton, WA / Olympic HS) was a significant piece of the bullpen last year appearing in a team high 15 games with an 2.59 ERA. Skoubo will have a similar role again.

Many Freshman and a transfer will be expected to contribute significantly on the hill starting with Washington St transfer RS-SO Mitch McQueen(Auburn, WA / Thomas Jefferson HS). McQueen has had a solid camp and will be a fixture in the rotation this Spring. Of the freshman RHP Patrick Bernard(Edmonds, WA / Edmonds-Woodway HS) and LHP Buck Hale(Vancouver, WA / Hudson's Bay HS) are also expected to have an impact. Either as a starter or key piece of bullpen, both had a great Fall and showed the ability to pound the strike zone. Other Freshman that will push for innings include RHP Quinn Eldridge (Chimicum, WA / Chimicum HS), submarine righty Ryota Koiwai(Japan) and 6'7" RHP Mike Gould(Bonney Lake, WA / Bonney Lake HS). Michaud and Moore are power arms that showed capable solidifying the bullpen in either a set up or closer role. Gamache will also give the Titans a quality LHP.

"It's crazy to think we can lose 3 of our 4 starters from last year and get better, but I think we could have. We have replaced those guys with some quality pitchers for this year," says Mummert. "We have more depth in our bullpen that we didn't have last year, so that is a huge advantage for us with 4 games a weekend. If some young arms step up for us which I expect they will, I feel really good about our pitching staff going into this Spring."
