Required items for the Fall 2009 Physics 121 class are

  • Physics for Scientists and Engineers by Randall Knight. You may use either the second edition or the first edition. (see below for details)
  • MasteringPhysics Student Access Kit (www.masteringphysics.com). It can be purchased with the text or separately. (see below for details)
  • A scientific calculator (with sine, cosine, and tangent functions). Some graphing calculators are fine. TI-92 or higher may NOT be used during exams and quizzes.
  • A bound lab notebook. The pages must be bound with thread. I recommend a thread bound composition book. One from previous quarters is fine. Loose leaf, spiral, and perforated notebooks are not acceptable.
  • Physics 121 Lab Packet available in the TCC Bookstore.

The physics faculty at TCC have decided to give you the option of purchasing either the first edition or the second edition of our Engineering Physics text. With planning, this could significantly reduce the amount you spend on the materials required for this class. For example, I have seen a used copy of Physics for Scientists and Engineers, 1st edition by Randall Knight (ISBN: 978-0-8053-8983-8) for $6. Even after adding in the MasteringPhysics Student Access Kit (ISBN: 978-0-321-51639-8) for $45 and the optional Student Workbook, 1st edition (ISBN: 978-0-8053-8984-5) (I have seen a used copy for $4) which are included with the new text, you could still save a lot.

What are the textbook options? Any one of these will work for this class. (The ISBNs are for the second edition and the first edition respectively.)

  1. Purchase a new copy of Physics for Scientists and Engineers Volume 1 by Randall Knight with MasteringPhysics (ISBN: 978-0-321-51662-6 or 978-0-8053-8963-0) from the TCC bookstore or another bookstore. This includes the first volume of the text, the first volume of the student workbook, and the MasteringPhysics Student Access Kit. Volume 1 includes all topics for Physics 121 at TCC. Students who take Physics 122 and 123 at TCC will need to purchase Volumes 2, 3, and 4 for these classes.
  2. Purchase a new copy of Physics for Scientists and Engineers by Randall Knight with MasteringPhysics (ISBN: 978-0-321-51661-9 or 978-0-8053-8982-1). This includes the standard edition text, student workbook, and the MasteringPhysics Student Access Kit. The standard edition text includes all topics for Physics 121, 122, and 123 at TCC.
  3. Purchase a new copy of Physics for Scientists and Engineers with Modern Physics by Randall Knight with MasteringPhysics (ISBN: 978-0-321-51333-5 or 978-0-8053-8685-1). This includes the expanded version of the text, the expanded student workbook, and the MasteringPhysics Student Access Kit. This version of the text includes all chapters in the standard edition, plus several additional chapters on modern physics. All topics covered in Physics 121, 122, and 123 at TCC are included in this version as well.
  4. Purchase a new or used copy of Physics for Scientists and Engineers Volume 1 by Randall Knight (text with the workbook volume 1 ISBN: 978-0-321-51667-1 or 978-0-8053-9008-7) (text without the workbook ISBN: 978-0-321-51671-8 or 978-0-8053-8964-7) and purchase a MasteringPhysics Student Access Kit (ISBN: 978-0-321-51639-8). Volume 1 includes all topics for Physics 121 at TCC. Students who take Physics 122 and 123 at TCC will need to purchase Volumes 2, 3, and 4 for these classes.
  5. Purchase a new or used copy of Physics for Scientists and Engineers by Randall Knight (text with workbook ISBN: 978-0-321-51656-5 or 978
