Thunderbirds fly away with our win 58-54 - Story by the TCC Challenge

Posted: 2/22/2011 3:33:00 PM

The visiting Thunderbirds swept into our house and took a much needed win away from our ladies Saturday evening. Tacoma is trying to clinch one of two remaining tournament bids from the West Division. Our Lady Titans are resting right on the cutoff, so at this point, every game becomes a must-win. The top four teams from each division earn a spot in the NWAACC Basketball Championships, held March 5-8 at the Toyota Center in Kennewick. After Saturday's loss, the Titans find themselves in fourth place, just one game behind Clark for third and also just one game ahead of Pierce, marking postseason elimination. The ladies have just two games left, one at home and one away. The next game is absolutely imperative that our Titans win, as they will be facing off against Clark in a game that essentially determines the last invitations into the tournament representing the West Division. The good news for our Titans is Clark has to play us in front of our crowd. The game will tip off Wednesday at 6:00pm in the Gym, and our ladies can use all of our support so let's get out there and give em' hell from the bleachers.

As for Saturday's game, we got behind early 11 to 3, but Sarah Quantz hit a big three to take the momentum back. Great defense and hustle brought Tacoma back, and eventually overtook Highline by two. From that point, it was quite a battle with much back and forth. Then, Tacoma started to take over, capitalizing from two key turnovers with fast-break finishes pulling up on Highline 24-19. Tacoma had the momentum and seemed very much in control of the pace of the game. The visitors were able to close the gap just before the half, going into the locker room just four points down.

The second half was a different story altogether. Highline came out firing on all cylinders; meanwhile, Tacoma couldn't get going on offense. However, the Titans outstanding defensive effort held off any potential charge from the visitors. The Thunderbirds still managed to take the lead back 36-34. As Highline continued chipping away at the score, the Titans never let up. The tale of the tape for much of the second half was defense. Quantz managed to break through the defensive standoff and hit a critical three-pointer that gave the lead back to Tacoma. This lead wouldn't last long as Highline answered back with a three of their own and a take away, fast break, and an easy two. The Titans fought their guts out, but a few close calls against us that Highline was able to capitalize on, gave the visitors the slight edge. The game would end in the Thunderbirds favor, knocking off Tacoma by just four points.

Honorable mentions
Oriana Pitts had 14 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assist, and 3 steals
Sarah Quantz had 19 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assist, and a steal
