Second-Half Charge Pushes Lady Titans past Chokers Story by the TCC Challenge

Posted: 1/18/2011 9:09:00 AM

A win at home Saturday night against the Grays Harbor Chokers places the Lady Titans at .500% and right into the thick of things in divisional play. During the warm-ups it was clear that the Titans were not only a deeper team than the Chokers, but had a slight edge in the height department too. Tacoma contributing six bodies from their bench as the visitors had only one.

The visitors managed to get on the board first. However, the slight edge would remain with the Titans for the rest of the half. Tacoma was up by three, just before the half ended, the Chokers got fouled and made the first of two to close the Titans lead to just two points. The second free throw came off the rim and the visitors had a chance to tie the game, but weren't able to capitalize on the offensive rebound and put back. The Chokers kept it close but the half would end with the Titans protecting their slight lead.

Tacoma's sophomore guard Sarah Quantz led the team's first half with 10 points. As a unit, the Titans shot 7/29 from the field, averaging 24.14%. They were an outstanding 10/11 from the line producing a whopping 90.91%, but the Titans' four attempts from beyond the arc failed to find the net.

The second half started out all Grays Harbor. The visitors would score first, tying the score. Then off a foul, they converted both free throws putting them up by two. They managed to begin pulling away from the Titans, and held a 41-32 lead at one point. Tacoma's freshman guard Claire Swayze hit a crucial 3-pointer which seemed to put a spark in the Lady T's. Tacoma went on a 12-0 run and the visitors had to call timeout to talk things over. Although the visitors tried to fight back, Tacoma's depth and finish proved too much as the Titan's sent the Chokers home with their fourth loss in divisional play.

The team would end the night shooting 28.57% from the floor, 16.67% from beyond the arc, and 80% at the line. The Titans had 13 second-chance points, 15 points off of turnovers, and their bench contributed for 13 points. The game's high scorers were Sarah Quantz with 20, Claire Swayze with 14, and Oriana Pitts with 11. Pitts also had 3 offensive boards and 8 defensive, totaling 11 rebounds.

Next up for Tacoma is Centralia. This home game will tip off at 6:00pm on Wednesday night, January 19th. Please come out and support your Lady Titans. Go Blue!
