Tacoma Community College Lady Titans shot lights out at Clark College en route to a convincing 86-70 women's basketball victory over the Penguins on Wednesday night at O’Connell Court. The win enabled the Titans (3-6 Northwest Athletic Association of Community College) to keep pace in the NWACC standings, fighting for a spot in the playoffs.
Sophomore Shavon Tate (Lincoln HS/Tacoma)(pictured right) set a school record for most points scored in a game (44pts). She couldn’t miss as she helped lead the Titan’s to a NWAACC victory and one step closer in the play-off hunt. Tate was 12-of-14 from the 3 point line, grabbed 15 rebounds, four assists, three steals and a block shot in her efforts acclaiming game highs in every statistical category. Joining in the offensive effort was Sophomore Jennifer Sorenson (White River HS/Buckley) with 17 points, four assists, and three steals, while fellow Freshman JaharaMiller (Foss HS/Tacoma) came off the bench to score 17 points with a perfect outing at the free-throw line. Sister’s Anna Kitzman and Ashley Kitzman had 20 and 21 points respectively for the Penguins who are currently in sole possession of fourth place in the NWAACC (4-4). Ashley Kitzman also grabbed a team high 15 rebounds leading her to another double-double.
Tacoma’s next home game is Saturday February, 2nd playing host to 2nd ranked South Puget Sound.
After a productive season last year making it to the 2006-07 NWAACC Championships the Lady Titans of Tacoma Community College welcome eight new players and two returnees as well as a new coaching staff to build upon their previous success. Of the eight new players, five are walk-ons. But these are not your average walk-ons and are all expected to make an immediate impact on this young but talented team. Sophomore returnee guards Jennifer Sorensen and Shavon Tate are expected to play major roles this year after concluding their freshmen campaigns! Amongst new players is Amanda Murdoch, a transfer from Eastern Washington University. Murdoch will undoubtedly be one of the top players in the league! She is a player who is capable of playing both a guard and small forward position’s. The Titan’s are full of athleticism, speed, and determination. With only one player over 5’8” the Titans will be a tough team to defend against. These ladies are versatile enough to shoot the ball from beyond the arc but tough enough to take the ball to the rack and bump some head’s. There are many tough teams in the Western Region of the NWAACC. Lower Columbia College is boasting the highest number of returnees at nine and will be a force to contend with. The reigning Western Region Champion’s, Highline Community College will be a dominant team in this league but are stoppable! With a veteran coaching staff and many returnees HCC will be at the top of everyone’s “hit” list! Clark will also pose a threat to many with the addition of some tough players including a transfer who was one of Oregon’s top players. The Titans open up a tough season with more than half of their pre-season games on the road before the season opener at Tacoma versus Clark College. The Titans faces a variety of non-league opponents to prepare itself for West Region action, with games against teams from the other three regions of the NWAACC. The rigorous schedule will challenge the team and make them better for the competitive conference schedule and post season play. As the 2007-08 Titans work hard, structure their team chemistry, grow and mature as a team and individuals the young team will only get better with each day and are looking forward to returning to the NWAACC Championships.

The Titans won on Wednesday night over Gray's Harbor by a score of 93-31. Tacoma started the game with five sophomores Dee Dee Jackson, Laura Olson, Kalei Frank, Jocelyn Moore, and Ashley Stephen due to it being Sophomore night. Getting things started for Tacoma was Sophomore Laura Olson who had the first 6 points for Tacoma. Akiko Ando was the first to come off the bench for the Titans and played solid defense.
The Titans have played a pressure type defense for most of the year but worked on playing their half court zone defense the second half of play. Tacoma scored 50 points in the first half by shooting the ball extremely well. Freshman Stephanie Wheless went 3-3 from the 3 point line in the first half to keep the momentum going the Titans way.
This was an unusually quick game with clean play from both teams. Neither team was in foul trouble since there were only 7 fouls called the entire game! "I don't know that I've ever seen a game without either team being in the bonus; well, I know according to my players they NEVER foul" Coach Rissmiller said jokingly. "I was happy for the sophomores in that they got to truly enjoy the night - I'm very proud of them and how far they have come!"
Next up for the Titans is the NWAACC tournament. They will play Everett on Thursday night 03-01-07 at 10 p.m.

Tacoma won the game against Pierce College by a score of 64-42. Pierce was only playing with five players - a scene all too familiar for Coach Rissmiller.
