Honored Coach adds to Win Column defeating Grays Harbor - Story by the TCC Challenge

Athletic Director and Men's Basketball Head Coach, Carl Howell, was honored Saturday night before Tacoma's home game against the Grays Harbor Chokers. The coach reached a big milestone on January 8th, 2011, obtaining his 300th career win. Tacoma's Executive Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs, Timothy Stokes, presented Coach Howell with an award commemorating this historic landmark for the coach and Tacoma's Athletics.

Tip-off was a bit unorthodox as the Titans gained possession, but the official immediately blew the whistle stopping play. An illegal jump gave Grays Harbor the ball first, and they were able to draw first blood on our boys. A few visitor points later, and the Titans were able to find their rhythm and get rolling. Tacoma's freshman forward Kevin Davis had some big defensive rebounds early in the contest, and may have been the difference in keeping the Titans slim lead in the very physical first half. Tacoma had some communication issues and bad decisions with the ball that allowed the Chokers to stay close throughout the half. The Titan men defiantly had some rust to shake off. The Titans went into the locker room with a one point lead, shooting 11/28 just 39.29% from the field, 3/13 producing 23.08% from beyond the arc, and 7/8 at the line.

As the men came out for the second half, the guests were able to take the lead and were up by as much as 4 points before the rust came off our Titan men. Around halfway through the second period, the Titans began to take over. A deeper bench and a quicker pace seemed to fatigue the visitors. Fouls seemed to be a great opportunity for the Chokers to get some much needed rest as they plagued the guests in the second half.

A highlight of the second half was when Tacoma's freshman guard Dominique Williams threw up an ally oop for Kevin Davis who put down the jam, awe-ing the crowd. Davis also had a monster block slamming the ball back onto the hardwood as the crowd responded with a loud OOOOHHHHHHH! Although the block did draw a foul, it seemed to add a needed spark to the Titans.

Tacoma took the game over down the stretch showing their dominance and finishing with the win 85-71. Brandon Magee had a big night and carried the Titans with his 27 points. The Titans were content, feeding him a steady diet of opportunity that he consistently capitalized on. Adding to his points, he had six offensive boards and four more off the defense glass, totaling 10 boards. Another top performer, Williams, finished with 16 pts, 6 rebounds, and 8 assists. Honorable mention goes to Nate Walker with 13pts and 7 boards and Jordan Coby with 12 pts and 4 boards.

Great win, Titans! The Titans improve their record to 4-0 in divisional play and 11-2 for the season. The new NWAACC polls come out on Tuesday and the 4th ranked Tacoma Titans looks to climb up the ladder. The Titans will have another home stand on Wednesday night, January 19th, against Centralia at 8pm. Let's get out there and show these men our support
