Tacoma, WA - The TCC Titans needed to win just one game over the past weekend to secure a spot in the playoffs for the 5th straight year under Head Coach Donegal Fergus, and they ended up with two and a little room to spare. By virtue of sweeping Centralia on Sunday, and Green River dropping two to Lower Columbia, Tacoma ends the regular season at 15-10 in league and alone in 2nd place. TCC will host Green River in a best-of-three divisional playoff series, beginning on Saturday, May 22 at Minnitti Field.

The weekend began inauspiciously, as TCC dropped a doubleheader to #1-ranked Lower Columbia by scores of 6-2, and 5-3. Patrick Meisenheimer gave the Titans 5 solid innings but allowed 5 runs and took the loss, his first of the year. Matt Williams had 4 hits on the day and also scored twice, while Riley Rosvold contributed 3 hits for Tacoma on the afternoon. Freshman David Lidyard got the start in the second game and pitched very well, but took the hard-luck loss, despite only allowing 1 earned run in 5 innings of work. Lower Columbia broke the 3-3 tie in the top of the 6th inning when a fly ball was dropped with 2 outs, and 2 runners on.

Tacoma rebounded nicely on Sunday by taking both games from the scrappy Centralia Trailblazers. Centralia needed to sweep the Titans in order to grab a playoff spot for themselves, and had their ace, University of Washington-bound Tyson Schmitt going for them on the mound, but Tacoma would not be denied. After Centralia finally broke through against TCC starter Colton Brown in the top of the 6th, the Titans answered right back with 2 runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to take a lead they would not give up. Brown earned his 8th win of the year by going 6 innings, and allowing just 1 run on 2 hits. Sean Santschi extended his NWAACC-leading save total to 9 with 1 1/3 innings of relief. Brandon Johnson, out for the past 3 weeks with a shoulder sprain, delivered the big blow offensively, with a 2-run double in the 6th.

Game 2 starter Andrew Olson was equally good, giving Tacoma a near-complete game. He went 6 2/3 innings without surrendering an earned run before yielding to Santschi for the last out. Santschi closed the door on the Blazers for his 10th save of the season. He also lowered his ERA to a microscopic 0.68. Johnson had another solid day at the plate, recording a couple of hits and driving in 2 more. Beau Rogers also scored twice to spark the TCC offense.

Tacoma will host the Western Region Playoffs beginning at 1pm on Saturday, May 22. The Titans took 3 of 5 games this year against Green River, and will look to continue that trend this weekend. Saturday starters are Colton Brown and Andrew Olson. Jordan Staples will get the nod on Sunday if a Game 3 is needed. The winner of the series moves on to the NWAACC Tournament, which kicks off Thursday morning, May 27 in Longview, WA.
