Tacoma, WA - The Tacoma Titans have announced their 2008 Recruiting Class. After their third straight postseason appearance, TCC Baseball continues to attract top-level talent from around the region. In just his third season at the helm of the Tacoma Baseball program, Head Coach Donegal Fergus and his staff have put together one of the most impressive recruiting classes in the NWAACC. Recruiting Coordinator Ron Rakowski and assistant coaches Anthony Szalyga, Jesse Spellmeyer, and Brian Kruse have landed some of the best players in the Pacific Northwest.

"We lost a lot of terrific players from last year's team," said Fergus. "Our sophomores were a talented bunch, as evidenced by the fact that nearly are all playing at 4-year schools now. There were big shoes to fill but I am extremely excited about the group we have coming in. My whole staff, Ron and Anthony especially, did a great job of signing the guys we needed. I can't wait to get started in the fall."

Class Highlights

  • Twelve All Conference selections
  • Eight of Baseball Northwest's Top 200
  • Two All State selections
  • One Conference Player of the Year
  • One Pre-Season All-American

Signee Bios

Sean Santschi, RHP, 6-2, 200 (Vancouver, WA, Skyview HS)
- 21 Inn. 3 wins. 1 Save. 27 K's. 0.68 ERA. OPP AVG .160
- Ranked #107 in Baseball Northwest 2008 Rankings
- 2008 Clark County Senior All Star Game invitee

Fergus on Santschi...
"Sean is one of the best prospects in the state on the mound. An arm injury in high school kept him off the radar of a number of schools I think, and that is a shame. This kid has one of the best fastballs in the 2008 class. He has been consistently clocked at 91-93 MPH and also has a terrific curveball. Look for big things from him next year."

Colton Brown, RHP, 6-3, 205 (Auburn, WA, Auburn HS)
- Honorable Mention All State
- Ranked #62 in Baseball Northwest 2008 Rankings
- 1st Team SPSL 3A

Fergus on Brown...
"Colton has an electric arm, and a terrific fastball that's been clocked as high as 90 MPH. With his frame and explosive arm action, that velocity should increase. His curveball has tremendous bite to it, and if he can learn to command it even more, he figures to be a true power pitcher in this conference."

Collin Bennett, CF, 6-1, 180 (Bellevue, WA, Newport HS)
- Ranked #15 in Baseball Northwest 2008 Rankings
- .359, 1 HR, and 10 RBI
- Seattle Post Intelligencer's 2008 All Area Team
- Bellevue Reporter's Male Athlete of the Year
- 1st Team KingCo 3A
- 2nd Team All State

Fergus on Bennett...
"Collin may be the best pure athlete in the state this year. He was a standout football and basketball player in high school and likely could have played college ball in any of the three sports. He is a highlight reel in center field and only getting better at the plate."

Ryne Briley, SS, 5-11, 170 (Auburn, WA, Auburn HS)
- 2008 Under Armour Pre-Season All-American
- Honorable Mention SPSL 3A
- Ranked #161 in Baseball Northwest 2008 Rankings

Fergus on Briley...
"Ryno is without question one of the best defensive infielders in the state. Very soft hands and a strong throwing arm with loose, easy actions. If his strength improves soon, so will his offensive game, and he will be the total package."

Sam Skantel, C, 5-11 180 (Vancouver, WA, Skyview HS)
- .415 avg. 2 HR. 10 SB. 530 OBP. Played every single inning this season
- The Columbian All Region Team
- 2008 Clark County Senior All Star Game invitee
- 1st Team Greater St. Helens League 4A

Fergus on Skantel...
"Sammy is Pete Rose reincarnated, without the gambling problem. His motor does not stop. His energy and competitiveness may make him a contributor right away."

Jordan Staples, SS, 6-3 180 (Vancouver, WA, Skyview HS)
- 2008 Clark County Senior All Star Game invitee
- 2nd Team Greater St. Helens League 4A

Fergus on Staples...
"Jordan has the potential to be a tremendous player. His size and athleticism are impressive. He can really defend in the middle and shows flashes of being a force at the plate. If his commitment and drive catch up to his talent, then he will be outstanding."

Riley Rosvold, OF, 5-11, 185 (Vancouver, WA, Skyview HS)
- 2008 Clark County Senior All Star Game invitee

Fergus on Rosvold...
"Riley has excellent speed and swings from the left side as well as anybody. He was an outstanding high school player and we expect him to be the same at our level."

Will Pierce, 1B, 6-1, 205 (Bellevue, WA, Newport HS)
- Honorable Mention KingCo 3A
- Ranked #83 in Baseball Northwest 2008 Rankings

Fergus on Pierce...
"Will is a big-bodied first baseman who projects to be a top-flight college hitter. Reminds me of a Derrek Lee. Not as tall but has that same feel around the bag and a line-drive swing with home run power."

Kris Ulmer, INF, 5-9, 165 (Nampa, ID, Columbia HS)
- 4A Southern Idaho Conference Player of the Year

Fergus on Ulmer...
"I had the pleasure of working with Kris at Santa Clara University's Prospect Camp last summer and was very impressed. He has a toughness about him that fits very well with our style of play here at TCC. Dominated his high school conference."

Dan Kathman, C, 5-9, 165 (Eatonville, WA, Eatonville HS)
- 1st Team Nisqually League

Fergus on Kathman...
"Dan is another off-the-charts energy guy. His motor is relentless and he makes his teammates better with the way he plays. We need more players like him."

Mike Sumi, SS, 6-1, 170 (Seattle, WA, Franklin HS)
- 2nd Team KingCo 4A

Fergus on Sumi...
"One of the toughest outs in the state. This kid loves to hit with two strikes. He has no fear at the plate. Will make the transition to wood bats as well as anyone we have."

Arek Jones, 2B, 5-9, 165 (Fife, WA, Fife HS)
- 1st Team Nisqually League

Fergus on Jones...
"Some people might call him a prototypical Coach Fergus guy. He is undersized but plays big. Solidly built and clean actions in the middle. "

Andy Scott, INF/RHP, 5-10, 160 (Bonney Lake, WA, Bonney Lake HS)
- 2nd Team SPSL 3A

Fergus on Scott...
"Another solid player with potential to help us in a number of ways. Comes from a good high school and good summer program. Must get stronger to reach potential."

Taylor Zambard, OF, 5-9, 185 (Sumner, WA, Sumner HS)
- 2007 1st Team SPSL 3A
- Ranked #75 in Baseball Northwest 2007 Rankings

Fergus on Zambard...
"Taylor returns home after a year at Division II Metro State University in Denver, CO. Hit .261 in 33 games last season. Was 6 for 6 in stolen base attempts. He brings some speed to the lineup and another veteran presence. "

Riley Kitchen, 2B, 6-0, 165 (Tacoma, WA, Franklin Pierce HS)
- Ranked #176 in Baseball Northwest 2008 Rankings

Fergus on Kitchen...
"We already have one Kitchen on the team (older brother Skyler) so we knew we wanted another. Riley is a productive middle infielder who projects as a solid college player. Great kid who knows how to play the game."

Alex Eccard, SS, 5-10, 160 (Eagle, ID, Eagle HS)
- Ranked #57 in Baseball Northwest 2008 ID Rankings
- 1st Team 5A Southern Idaho Conference

Fergus on Eccard...
"Another Boise-area product who can really play. Smooth actions defensively and room to grow offensively. Alex has a chance to be very good if he can improve his strength."

Jordan Baranska, 2B, 5-9, 165 (Maple Valley, WA, Tahoma HS)

Fergus on Baranska...
"Another Fergus-type player, small and scrappy. Good actions on the infield and productive offensive player who can really handle the bat."

Kyle Holtman, C, 5-10, 165 (Lake Tapps, WA, Auburn Riverside HS)

Fergus on Holtman...
"Kyle has played a number of positions and will likely continue to do so here at TCC. Solid behind the plate but best tool is his bat."

Mitch Davidoff, INF/OF, 6-1, 170 (Victoria, BC, Lambrick Park Secondary)

Fergus on Davidoff...
"A young player with a lot of potential. Mitch has size and power potential. Ball really jumps off his bat. May play both infield and outfield. I see Mitch becoming a terrific player before he's through."
