4-07-08 Carl Howell Returns to Coach TCC Men’s Basketball

Carl Howell is resuming leadership of the Tacoma Community College men’s basketball team as head coach while retaining his position as Athletic Director.

Head of the TCC men’s basketball program from 1992-2003, Coach Howell retains the title of TCC’s all-time most winning basketball coach.  While leading the Titans to a 239-82 record, Howell sustained a 74.5 winning percentage over 11 years. In addition the Titans were 138-26

( 84.1%) in Howell’s last five seasons. He coached the Titans to four straight NWAACC (Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges) Western Regional Championships (1999-2002), and led TCC to the NWAACC championship game in 2001 and 2002, winning the  NWAACC Championship in 2002. Howell is only the third coach in NWAACC history to achieve four straight regional titles and have two thirty-win seasons.  Fifteen of Coach Howell’s players from TCC teams have advanced to Division I basketball programs.  In recognition of his outstanding achievements, Howell was once named Coach of the Year by the NWAACC.  He also achieved recognition as Western Region Coach of the Year four times, and served five times as Head Coach of the NWAACC All-Star Game.

Howell returned to TCC as Athletic Director in 2007 after four seasons as Associate Head Coach and Recruiting Coordinator at Eastern Washington University, where the Eagles advanced to the NCAA tournament in the first year of his leadership. As men’s basketball coach he replaces Arvin Mosley, who resigned on February 26th to pursue other opportunities. Mosley coached the Titans from 2003-2008, and compiled a record of 46-88 . TCC looks forward to a dynamic and successful men’s basketball program under Howell’s direction, while the athletic department continues to thrive under his leadership as athletic director.  “I’m really excited to again be the men’s basketball coach at TCC,” said Howell.

Dave Pelkey, Dean of International Student Services and Programs, believes that Howell will provide strong leadership for the men’s basketball program.  “Carl has a demonstrated history as a coach at TCC, and we believe the program is in good hands.  We look forward to having Coach Howell back on the court representing TCC,” said Pelkey.

2007 Hall Of Fame Dinner a Success

TCC raises more than $9,000 for athletic scholarships at First Annual Hall of Fame dinner and auctio photo

Friday, November 09, 2007Tacoma, Wash. – Tacoma Community College raised more than $9,000 to benefit student athletic scholarships, at the First Annual Hall of Fame dinner and auction on Nov. 3, held on the college’s Tacoma campus. The event honored former TCC players and coaches. Six athletes and two teams were inducted into TCC’s Hall of Fame.

“The inaugural Hall of Fame dinner was an outstanding event,” said Dr. Pamela Transue, TCC president. “It was a perfect opportunity to honor former coaches and athletic directors who were instrumental in establishing quality sports programs at TCC. It was also inspiring to hear from our former student athletes and how sports played a significant role in the achievement of their educational goals and success in their careers.”

“TCC’s athletic program adds a sense of commitment to a student’s overall educational experience,” said Carl Howell, director of athletics. The coaching staff is committed to helping student athletes continue their education and athletic careers. Athletic scholarships are awarded to prospective and current students who have demonstrated an interest in sports and maintain good academic standing.

Funds for scholarships were raised through a silent auction held during the event. Popular auction items included an autographed 2006 All-Star photo of NBA athletes Kobe Bryant and Dwayne Wade; autographed photo of the cast from Desperate Housewives; autographed basketball signed by Detroit Piston and Kent resident Rodney Stuckey; autographed 2007-08 team photo of the Portland Trail Blazers; and more.

With 179 attendees, it’s no wonder the event was a success. “We had former athletes, coaches, faculty, staff and administrators from the 70s to now, all in attendance,” said Howell. A keynote speech was delivered by Frank Bosone, former executive director of the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (1979-92).

The 2007 Hall of Fame inductees included Mike Blowers, 1983 to 1985 baseball player (1989 to 1999 Major League Baseball career with Yankees, Mariners and Dodgers); Tom Keegan, 1980 to 1989 men’s soccer coach (NWAACC Runner up 1983 and 1984), current president at Peninsula College; Don Moseid, 1967 to 1976 men’s basketball coach (NWAAC Championship in 1971 and 1974); Tom Patnode, 1967 to 1969 men’s basketball player (1969 most valuable player; later played at Pacific Lutheran University); Loyd Percy, 1967 to 1975 athletic director; and Phyllis Templin, 1977 to 1992 athletic director (first female athletic director in NWAACC). Team honorees included 1971 men’s basketball, and 1974 men’s basketball.

“I look forward to attending future inductions and commend Carl Howell for his hard work in establishing this event,” Transue said.

“I really think this event will reconnect us with many of our athletic alumni,” said Howell. The Hall of Fame dinner and auction is one of many new efforts to support and develop relationships with TCC alumni. Alumni of the college may complete a TCC Alumni Information Form available at www.tacomacc.edu/alumniandfriends.
