Admission Information

Health Information Management (HIM) Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS)
Program Admission Requirements

Student entry accepted Fall and Winter quarters only. Our next entry is Fall 18. Fall applications for priority consideration are due April 16th with notification of acceptance by May 10th. Applications received after May 10th will be put in a pool for late consideration if there are any available seats after priority consideration students are seated. Late consideratrion students will be notified of the status of their application by August 13th.

1. Previous Education Requirements

Associate Degree, or equivalent credits, in health related field. Course work must include the following topics:

  • Healthcare Statistics, Data Analytics, Data Quality and Performance Improvement, and Revenue Cycle. Students who have not completed the above courses may take individual study to meet these requirements (arrangements made through HIM Advisor).
  • Medical Coding. Students who have not completed a coding course can take courses through the HIT Associate Degree Program.

Please note that, while we do not have a limit on how long ago your degree and/or courses were  completed, the healthcare industry is constantly changing. If your coursework was over 5 years ago and you do not have industry experience then you may wish to either retake an Associate degree level course OR do self study to ensure you have the appropriate knowledge base.

2. Pre-Requisite General Education Requirements

In addition to the above degree requirements, students must have 90 credits total and have completed:

  • 5 credits in college level English Composition
  • 5 credits in Human Anatomy and Physiology

3. Certificate of Completion from the HIM BAS Virtual Information Session

4. Formal Application for the BAS

Application Factoring System

It is anticipated that there will be more applicants to the BAS program than there are available positions. Therefore if a student meets the requirements for a completed application, it does not guarantee admission into the program. Candidates will be considered for admission based on a number of factors, to include advanced healthcare credentials (such as RHIT, CCS, RN, CPC, RRT, etc.), coursework completed in college level STEM, leadership/management/human relations, and communication courses, number of years of work or volunteer experience in healthcare, military status, and college level GPA.

Applicants will be notified of their admission into the HIM BAS program via their TCC Email and will be asked to confirm their acceptance of admission. In the event class openings occur, alternates will be considered for admission.

Admission policies are subject to change. Applications will be accepted under the terms in place at the time an application is received by the Allied Health Office. It is the responsibility of the applicant to keep up-to-date on any changes that may affect his/her qualifications for acceptance.
