Why should I use this center?

We have many resources (computers, handouts, credited courses), a great study atmosphere, knowledgeable tutors and staff, and using this center is FREE!!! We recommend making an appointment to see a tutor; however, we have limited drop-in slots available.

How do I schedule or cancel an appointment?

Appointments for various subjects can be made or cancelled in person (Building 7, Room 221) or by calling 253.566.6032. We ask that you call at least 3 hours before your scheduled appointment if you are planning to cancel your tutoring session.

What subjects can I be tutored in?

Our tutors can help you in many different subjects. Here are just a few: English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Accounting, French, English as a Second Language (ESL), Engineering, Physics, Economics, Computer User (CU), Spanish, and all writing projects/ papers--personal, professional or academic.

What if I need help and my subject is not listed?

Our tutoring staff will do their best to find a tutor who can help you. Subject request forms are available in the Writing & Tutoring center (Building 7, Room 221) or you can call or e-mail your subject requests.

What do I need to bring to the Writing & Tutoring Center for my session?

To be fully prepared for your tutoring session, we ask that you bring your Student Identification Number (SID) and all coursework and supplies needed for your sessions such as books, notes and calculators.

Can I be scheduled with the same tutor every session?

Although we do not schedule permanent tutoring appointments* (the same time with the same tutor throughout the quarter), we do our best to accommodate your needs. Our tutors are scheduled on a “first come, first schedule” basis. We recommend that you schedule your session one week in advance if you would like the same tutor.  *Writing 96 students may schedule their appointments for the entire quarter.

How much tutoring can I get per week?

Students who are enrolled at Tacoma Community College can receive up to 2 hours a week per subject. So, if you have 3 classes you can receive up to 6 hours a week of tutoring (2 hours for each class you are taking).

What if I cannot come to the Writing & Tutoring Center?

We now offer eTutoring! Get online help with Math questions and Writing projects even when the Writing & Tutoring Center is closed! From the TCC Student Portal, simply click on the "Learning Resources" tab and follow the eTutoring link provided to get to the website. Your first time, there will be some small amount of information required to complete your registration.

eTutoring promises a 24-48 hour turnaround on papers and questions that are submitted. Please remember to take this into account when you are submitting your work, allowing plenty of time before your paper is due.

What happens during a writing tutorial?

Please refer to our "What to Expect from writing tutors" handout, linked here.

Are there other resources available in the Writing & Tutoring Center?

YES! We have computers (with no time limit for course related work!), course-credit opportunities, handouts and more!
