Students in Service is a Campus Compact AmeriCorps program that supports and promotes the engagement of higher education students in their communities by offering education awards to those who particpate in community service, service-learning, or civic engagement activities. The Students in Service program strives to develop a regional network of student leaders committed to serving and strengthening local communities in partnership with pre-school through college educators and community-based organizations. For more information please visit the website at www.studentsinservice.org.
Enrolled members can serve in positions that fit within any of the five focus areas identified by AmeriCorps: education, the environment, human needs, public safety and homeland security. Appropriate service activities would include but are not limited to: tutoring or mentoring in schools or preschool programs, participating in service-learning courses or certain internship/practicum programs, working with environmental projects or at community service agencies, serving as a service-learning coordinator on their campus or a variety of other ways that are of personal and/or scholastic interest.
The Students in Service program offers three term of service options for students:
Once a Students in Service member completes their term of service, s/he will then be eligible to receive an Education Award. The Education Award comes in the form of a voucher, it is not cash. You can apply the voucher to qualified student loans or toward the cost of attendance at any Title IV higher education institution.
This program is open to all students, including work-study students who choose service positions. Work-study students are eligible to receive their work-study wages in addition to the education award. Service oriented work-study is the only type of paid position in which members can serve while accruing AmeriCorps service hours.
To participate in the Students in Service program you must meet the following requirements:
Members are responsible for finding and securing their own service site. A list of available sites will be maintained in Transition Services.
