Changes to Intermediate Algebra at TCC

Beginning Spring quarter, Math 97 and Math 99 will no longer be offered.  Instead, they will be replaced by Math 95, Intermediate Algebra. Math 95 will be the new prerequisite for courses that currently require Math 97 and 99.  The one exception is Math& 141, Precalculus.

What does this mean for you?

Completion of Math 95 (with a grade of C- or better) will serve as the prerequisite for any of the following college-level math classes: Math& 107, Math in Society; Math& 146, Intro. to Statistics; Math 147, College Algebra for Business and Economics; and Math 170 /171, Math for Elementary School Teachers.

What if you plan to take Math &141, Precalculus?

The new prerequisite for Math &141 will be the Math 96/Math 140 linked course (Math 96 is 3-credit “Accelerated Algebra,” Math 140 is 2-credit “Introduction to Precalculus”:  5 credits total).  Students who complete Math 90 with a grade of B or better can immediately enroll in Math 96/140.  Math 95 will also serve as a prerequisite for Math 96/140.

What if you are planning to go into a Allied Health profession?

TMath 100 has not changed!  Allied Health students (Nursing, radiology, respiratory therapy) should still take TMath 100, which is specifically designed for students going into these fields, and meets the math requirements for all necessary science classes these students are required to take.

FOR MORE INFORMATION, talk to your advisor or MARC staff (Bldg. 19, Room 22). Refer also to the linked flow chart.

The Mandelbrot Set

The TCC Mathematics Department offers courses that cover the first two years of a typical four year college mathematics program (college level courses) as well as courses to develop math skills to the point where a student is ready for college level courses. For more information on course offerings and prerequisites, see the Mathematics section of the TCC course catalog.

For help with determining what math class you should take, your best bet is to consult with a full-time math faculty member or speak to an advisor in the Math Advising and Resource Center (MARC). We also provide a guide to what math class to take on the frequently asked questions list for the math department. You can also request a math entry code by filling out this entry code form and taking it to the (Math Center Bldg. 19 Room 22). If you still have questions, feel free to email our Math Department and we will respond within three days.

NOTE: All students must take the placement test before enrolling in a math class. In preparing for the placement test, you may find it useful to study the Math Placement Review Guide (provided here in PDF format).

Math Instructors see Math Faculty Resource Page for course guidelines and other helpful information. (You will need to get UserID and Password from the Department Chair to use this section)

See the math faculty page to get instructor schedules and contact information.

The newest student support service we offer is the Math Advising and Resource Center (sometimes called the "MARC" or the "Math Center"). The MARC offers drop-in tutoring, on-the-spot advising, and other support for math students. For full details, see the MARC web site.
