Health Information Management

The Health Information Technology (HIT) program at TCC leads to an Associate of Applied Sciences Degree as well as a Certificate of Completion from the program.  Successful graduates are eligible to write the national certification exam for Health Information Technicians sponsored by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).  Upon passing this exam, graduates will receive the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) credentials from AHIMA, which are recognized nationally by all health care institutions.  (The former professional title is Accredited Record Technician, ART, which has been renamed RHIT effective January 1, 2000).

The program is accredited by the Commission on the Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management (CAHIIM).  Courses consist of a combination of medical knowledge, healthcare industry, legal, business, and information technology applications designed to prepare the graduate for employment.  The skills students acquire in this program are outlined in the AHIMA Associate Degree Entry-Level Competencies for the profession and include the following:

Healthcare Data Management:

Ø Collect, maintain and analyze healthcare data.

Ø Monitor and comply with healthcare information requirements and standards.

Ø Apply clinical classification coding systems including ICD-9-CM and CPT/HCPCS.

Ø  Applying medical reimbursement guidelines and regulations as required by Federal laws and prospective payment systems.
