Welcome to TCC's Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program!
This is a CAAHEP accredited General sonography program which leads to an Associate of Applied Science degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. The program is full time and runs 21 calendar months in duration. All students complete the didactic and laboratory work on campus and the clinical education in an affiliated ultrasound department. Successful graduates acquire skills in obtaining pertinent patient histories, performing sonographic studies and providing for the comfort and needs of the patient during the examination. Multi-system anatomy and pathophysiology are heavily emphasized throughout all courses. Additional skills and traits that are required for this profession are attention to detail, efficiency, excellent hand/eye coordination, flexibility, and unconditional compassion. Students must be able to understand, read, speak, and write English fluently.

For anyone intending to apply for the program, attendance at one of the Sessions is mandatory for the calendar year you intend to apply. All Information Sessions are held on the main Tacoma Community College campus in Bldg. 19, Rm. 21 from 3:30pm to 4:30pm. No registration is necessary.

DMS students acquire skills in reviewing and recording pertinent clinical patient history, performing the sonographic examination, providing for the comforts and needs of the patient during the examination, and recording the anatomic, pathologic and physiologic data for interpretation by the supervising physician. Thoroughness, accuracy, and empathy are traits needed by persons interested in this program. They should also be versatile and able to follow precise and detailed directions.
Upon successful completion of this program graduates are eligible to take the certifying examinations of the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers in the specialty areas of ultrasound physics and instrumentation, abdomen and obstetrics-gynecology. Positions are available in hospital ultrasound departments, clinics, and private physicians' offices.
This program is accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Programs and the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). More information about program accreditation can be found at www.caahep.org and www.jrcdms.org.
