EMT Basic Certificate
The EMT-Basic Program at Tacoma Community College trains students in fundamental emergency medical procedures including, but not limited to:
- HIV/HBV Prevention
- Baseline Vitals
- Lifting and Moving of Patients
- Airway Management
- Communication and Documentation
- General Pharmacology
- Respiratory, Cardiovascular, Behavioral and other Emergencies
- Bleeding and Shock
- Injuries to Head and Spine
- Diabetes and Allergies
- Infant and Child Emergency Care
This course adheres to the U.S. Department of Transportation Guidelines and the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services standards. Admission into the EMT-Basic (EMC110) course is regulated by the State of Washington.
Upon successful completion of the course, students will receive a Certificate of Completion from Tacoma Community College. This will enable them to participate in the National Registry Test (NRT).
Please note: students must be at least 18 years of age to sit for the NRT and obtain Washington State certification. After successfully passing this exam, the student will be able to work as an EMT.
Admission Requirements for the EMT-Basic Course
- Accuplacer assessment exam scores showing placement at ENGL/ 085 or higher
- Accuplacer assessment exam scores showing placement at MATH 085 or higher or successful completion with a C grade or higher in MATH 075
- Current driver’s license
Emergency Medical Technician – Basic Certificate (10 credits)
The EMT-Basic program is the entry-level certification course for the Emergency Medical and Health Services field.

How to Enroll
The EMT- Basic program is offered every quarter. There is no longer a formal program application process and students now enroll on a first-come, first-served bases during open registration for classes. Classes will meet every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m., and then every other Saturday from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. (total of 5 Saturdays).
