Mission:

The Sustainability Advisory Committee will help employees, students and community members better understand, enact, and promote sustainability principles. We will accomplish our mission by:

  • educating ourselves about sustainabilty issues.
  • serving in an advisory capacity to the president and other college leaders.
  • providing educational resources to the campus and community.
  • initiating, promoting, and participating in activities related to sustainability.

How do we DEFINE “sustainability”?

Sustainability is a philosophy or practice that strives to maintain something indefinitely.

The term is often applied to the management of natural resources such as water, fuel, and timber so that there is a perpetual supply.  Sometimes the concept includes less tangible “resources” such as economic capital, human ingenuity, public health, political freedom, cultural heritage, art, etc.

The underlying assumption is that we have a moral obligation to conserve these resources.  For whom? Most agree it is for people: those present today and those born in the future.  However, other species and nonliving entities are recognized as having rights also.

Experience has shown that resources cannot be sustainably managed when there is injustice, inequality, dysfunctional economies, poor physical, mental, and spiritual health, and inadequate understanding of environmental dynamics.  Thus, the term sustainability has come to represent the complex interplay and interdependency among all of these factors.

At TCC, we embrace sustainability in its broadest sense.  It is a visionary perspective and a set of guiding principles for long-term healthy interactions among people, and between people and the rest of the universe.

Our VISION

All TCC employees and students will be aware of, and dedicated to, sustainability principles which will be reflected in campus operations, curricula, and in our interactions with one another and with the community.
