This week we celebrate Commencement not only here at TCC, but at the Washington Correction Center for Women (WCCW) and Mission Creek Correction Center for Women (MCCCW). And some of the work done by students in a MCCCW Humanities 101 class will be on display this summer at TCC Gig Harbor. The exhibit shares space with a Peninsula Art League Exhibit which opens June 21, with a reception June 28.

The exhibit features masks made by MCCCW students for a Humanities 101 class project exploring interpretations of the students’ social and cultural identities. The class was part of MCCCW’s inaugural offering under the Second Chance Pell Initiative, a federal program signed by then President Obama that selected a specific group of correctional education programs around the country to offer incarcerated individuals the chance to apply for and receive federal Pell grants for higher education.

“We hope to use this opportunity to connect our students to their communities while allowing some insight into what goes on in corrections education,” said Dr. Sultana A. Shabazz, TCC’s Director of Corrections Education at MCCW and the Washington Correction Center for Women (WCCW). “We are also expecting to have students’ family on hand to enjoy the experience.”
