"Grandpa Im" helps ELC kids with an art project

Monday, May 07, 2012 – Don’t miss the 2012 City of Destiny Awards, held at Stadium High School Tuesday, May 8 from 7-9 p.m. The event will be live on TV Tacoma – and the Early Learning Center’s ECAP classroom “Grandpa” will be honored with the Adult Leadership Award. The program will also include a short video filmed at the ELC a few weeks ago.

Kyoung Mo Im, universally known as “Grandpa” to the staff, students and parents of the ELC, has been volunteering regularly in the ECAP classroom since the new center opened. He reads to kids, helps them with art projects… and probably most importantly, he makes the kids who are having trouble adjusting to preschool feel at home.

According to ELC Program Assistant Angela Wheeler, “Grandpa” pitches in to help out wherever he happens to find himself.

“He takes care of his whole building,” said Wheeler. “He interprets for people. He knows 4 or 5 languages – English, Spanish, Japanese, Korean. And he’s always trying to speak Russian.”
