Tacoma Community College

Dr. Sheila Ruhland is the eighth president of Tacoma Community College. She began her presidency in March of 2015. A longtime resident of Wisconsin, this is the second time she has returned to live in the Pacific Northwest.

Most recently, Dr. Ruhland served as president at Moraine Park Technical College in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin for four years. Her previous experience includes:

  • Vice President of Instruction:  Rockingham Community College in Reidsville, North Carolina; Clatsop Community College in Astoria, Oregon
  • Assistant Professor, Department of Work, Community and Family Education, University of Minnesota
  • Dean of Business, Western Wisconsin Technical College, La Crosse, Wisconsin
  • Dean of Business and Marketing, Southwest Wisconsin Technical College, Fennimore, Wisconsin
  • Instructor, Madison Area Technical College, Madison, Wisconsin

Dr. Ruhland began her educational career at a community college. She earned her first degree with an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Business Administration, Marketing-Fashion Merchandising from Madison Area Technical College in Madison, Wisconsin. She later earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Marketing and Distributive Education from the University of Wisconsin-Stout in Menomonie, Wisconsin. She returned to Madison, where she earned her Master of Science degree in Continuing and Vocational Education and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Continuing and Vocational Education with a minor in Educational Administration from the University of Wisconsin.

She currently serves on a number of boards, including the South Sound Together Project Board, Pierce County Workforce Development Council, Community Colleges for International Development Board, Advance Career and Technical Education Board and the American Association of Community Colleges Commission on Emerging Trends.  She is a member of the Washington Association of Community and Technical College Presidents, American Association of Community Colleges and Association of Community Colleges Trustees.  She is an active Rotarian and a Paul Harris Fellow.

Dr. Ruhland enjoys a strong relationship with her extended mid-western family and is an experienced traveler. Theater and cultural events, numerous outdoor activities, and reading mystery novels occupy her time away from work.
