Soc 120 Biography Assignment

Part One: Obtaining Instructor Approval of Biography Topic (See Course Schedule for Due Date)

Choose two women from the U.S. (labeled first and second choice) who differ from you in at least one way with regard to race or sexual orientation for your project. The instructor must approve your choice. On a sheet of paper, write the following sentence for each woman, filling in the blanks:

First Choice I choose to do my project on ____________ because she is/was ____________ and I am ____________.
Second Choice I choose to do my project on ____________ because she is/was ____________ and I am ____________.

Example

First Choice I choose to do my project on Audre Lorde because she was African American and I am white..
Second Choice I choose to do my project on Hillary Clinton because she identifies as heterosexual and I identify as a lesbian.

No two students may choose the same person. Should this happen, the instructor will make the choice randomly. To avoid this happening, students are encouraged to turn in Part One as soon as they as determine the woman they wish to research. Students who turn in Part One prior to the due date need only turn in one name.

Part Two: Presentation with Transparencies or PowerPoint (See Course Schedule for Due Date)

  1. Research your woman using at least three sources (including at least one book and/or journal article).
  2. Present your research in a three-five minute class presentation. Presentations must be given to the class in order to receive points for the transparency/PowerPoint copies and references.
  3. Turn in paper copies of your transparencies or PowerPoint presentation (do not turn in the transparencies) along with a reference page using APA style (See Biography Evaluation Form for grading criterion).
  4. Students arriving after presentations have begun will have five points deducted from their total points for the project.

Transparency/PowerPoint Content

Using an outline format, prepare transparencies or a PowerPoint presentation to use during your presentation. Note: If you are using a PowerPoint presentation it must be brought to class on a thumb drive. Include the following.

  1. Who was she? Where did she live? When did she live? What did she do? Why should we know about her?

  3. What privileges and opportunities did she receive from being inside the mythical norm? What did she lose being outside the mythical norm?
